DESIGN NAME: Andromeda
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sculptural Lighting
INSPIRATION: Inspired by mid-century modern lighting, string art and tensegrity sculptures. After writing a book on Buckminster Fuller I was inspired to begin creating structures and finding practical applications for them. Through a unique and experimental design process, products are conceptualized, prototyped and brought to life.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Andromeda Lighting Series is part sculpture and part lamp. Intricately woven string criss crosses between a wooden frame making colorful geometric patterns. With endless color combinations we are able to customize a one-of-kind lamp. Part new technology, part old world hand craftsmanship.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: A piece of art when off, turn it on and it lights up the room and creates geometric patterns on the wall. Depending on the colors involved it creates a warm soothing mood throughout the room.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: 2014-2015. 1 year, Portland Oregon
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Lighting Products and Fixtures Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: We started designing these lamps by created cardboard models. After we were happy with the shapes we then had plywood laser cut with nodes in the notches so all the parts snap together. A specific number of smaller notches were implemented to take the string and to created our patterns. We came up with our standard color palettes based on color combinations we found in nature.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The lamp sizes vary from 8x8x13" to 12x12x31" and come with a plug or ceiling rose depending on if it is a pendant or floor/table model.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Type of Research: Studied the works of Buckminster Fuller and other architects. We also studied some string-art sculpture from the 50's and 60's. The objective was to create a form first and try to let the form reveal its purpose as it was being created. We prefer to use this experimental process of creating products as we are often pleasantly surprised by the results. A goal was to created a conversation piece for one's home and to create a piece of art but that art has to have a specific purpose other than being observed.
CHALLENGE: The hardest challenge was the time involved in stringing and creating pleasant patterns and color combinations. We had other challenges such as getting the nodes perfect and altering them based on different thicknesses of the plywood.
