DESIGN NAME: V-Cube
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Puzzle cube packaging
INSPIRATION: The main design challenge was to create a new packaging design that would give the product high perceived value while being unique and cost effective. The unique shape is inspired by Pisa tower.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This packaging is unique, as it differentiates from the competition. Has a unique - patented - shape. The product (cubes) are visible from all sides. When stucked it creates an interesting and unique pattern. It is used for the following products:
V-Cube2, V-Cube3, V-Cube 4, V-Cube Collections(Gems of design, Art emotions, Nature & wild life and Greek Memories)
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This unusual, distinct package that allow all puzzle cube sides to be seen by the consumer. It is very attractive that can be used as a stand for the cube after opening. Inside the box there is a leaflet with company information, warnings and puzzle cube solution for V-Cube.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was started in September 2014 in Athens - Greece and finished in January 2015.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: During the research phase, we collected all competitive cubes in the market for study and afterwards we took the strategic decision to design packaging for the cube that had to be 100% visible to the consumer since the cube was a really beautiful product. Competitors use mostly blister packaging or the classic hexagonal one.
The selected packaging design was a result of brainstorming and other idea generation methods. After countless sketches, the final packaging cocncept was approved for further development.
Quick and dirty prototypes were made to evaluate if it can be manufactured with the available materials before proceeding to the next development phase. All the weaknesses of the packaging construction were revealed following the alpha prototype creation. We played around with many solutions before coming to the optimal one which was unusual but functional fusing two completely different materials, paperboard and PET.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Package standing dimensions: 13cm x 6cm x 12cm. The package consists of 2 parts: paperboard and PET.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Our researched started with the analysis of the puzzle cube market with physical samples and web research. We analysed strength and weaknesses of competitor packaging. Based on findings we designed V-Cube packaging to be dinstinct and to have high perceived value.
CHALLENGE: The packaging materials used were limited due to budget limitations.
Designing attractive, durable and reusable packaging that consumers would love to buy right and then.
Key Issues
Achieving the desired production cost goal
Uniqueness and dinstinctiveness
Designing a new unique packaging structure
Working on a paper prototype cube
2 different cube dimensions that had to fit in one packaging with fixed dimensions
Easy storage on the shelf
Packaging material limitations due to low budget
Very tight deadline
