DESIGN NAME: Inception
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chair
INSPIRATION: Based on the spinning top in the Inception film. The combination of image of spinning top and its smooth curve creates Inception chair.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Inception will be made from the newest technology in material field which is composite. This type of material is more durable, more timber and more affordable than others. In different view, people can feel the sophisticated gloss in every angles and surface. During the creation, the most difficult question was about how could the chair legs suppose to resist the considerable weight but still meet the aesthetic. With the curve surface design (surface tension) the problem had been solved.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The sophisticated curve creates relaxed feeling cause the users will image that they are sitting on smoothly silk. Forgetting the feeling that they are sitting in the normal chair. People can use it very easily in rough surface with the special design – three legs.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was completed during several days with strong passion and high inspiration in August, 2015. The idea for sketching was finished in Hanoi at the first day and the prototypes have been done in the following day. Although the project was implemented in the short period of time, Inception is a highly promising in furniture design field.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The original concept was based on the curved shape and the design progressed for a softer visual finish, timber was the preferred choice.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research for Inception was based on final material selections. A lot of research was conducted at the prototype stage especially into the use of plantation or certified timber. The compsite was researched and tested not only to enable sufficient strength but also to be portable due to light weight. Therefore, the shipping process will be easier and safer and less risk. It is very useful in processing the angle and surface to be sophisticated. Moreover, the price of this material is affordable so the user can buy it easily.
CHALLENGE: Nowadays, the composite material is more popular than before. A lot of furniture designers use it in their designs so how to make it stand out is a difficult question.
