DESIGN NAME: Pulse Pavilion
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Interactive installation
INSPIRATION: The connection between sound, light and colour, especially the interaction of RGB and CMYK colour systems. I also dealt with Goethe's Theory of Colours and I wanted to make an "analog" animation without any digital projections using print colours with light colours. I was also inspired by the work of James Turrell, Carnovsky, Vasarelly and Haroon Mirza.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Pulse Pavilion main concept is about how to make a basic animation, an optical illusion without any digital devices or movement, and how design, light, and music can interact with each other. The visualisation on the wall and the graphics used throughout the identity are based on the sound waves of the track that you hear inside the pavilion. The rythm of the track is synchronised with the alternation of the different coloured lights, thus when the pulsing sound is getting faster the animation does too. This gives the illusion of seeing the audio while listening to it.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The installation uses light, colours and sound to create abstract anamorphosis and a sensation of tension and illusion. From the outside the cube is painted black, while on the inside the wall is covered by vibrant graphics that are a visual representation of the audio that plays in the background. The animation on the wall is based on the RGB-CMYK colour systems. The digitally printed CMYK material is lit by RGB LED lights. The RGB light acts as a filter and doesn't let us see a certain spectrums of colours, so we end up perceiving the alternation of these filters as an animation.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The structure and facade of the pavilion was made from wood, painted black from the outside. The inside graphics and the brand materials, like posters and pins, were printed digitally. To create the "analog" animation simple led lights were used. There were also 2 speakers hidden inside, that emitted the pulsing sound.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The pavilion is a 3 meter tall, wide and deep black cube with one door to enter. Inside one is standing in a cylinder with a diameter of approximately 3 meters. On the walls of the cylinder one can see the anamorphical projection. The brand elements, stationery, have usual dimensions like B1 posters, A4 format publications and A5 flyers printed digitally on white paper. The 1 minute long pulsing sound, is made digitally in Cubase Studio audio editing software.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The main research was about anamorphosis based artworks, light installations, Swiss poster design, 3D modelling art and noise music.
The technical implementation was preceded by a lengthy experimentation, as the the colour of the commonly available LED lamps differs somewhat from the perfect RGB colours. A number of different CMYK printing settings had to be tested, so that the imperfect RGB lights filter the CMYK colours with the best result.
CHALLENGE: To figure it out how a sound can be visually represented. and to synchronise the RGB light alternation rhythm with the sound rhythm.
