| DESIGN NAME: Strabo PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sofa INSPIRATION: The Strabo Sofa was originally part of a store design that would allow a new brand to emerge with a unique & strong identity. This sofa & chairs were to be one of the signatures to this store. Inspiration came from the most primitive geometric shapes - triangles. Triangle is a very dynamic shape, so most of the furniture was made based on this form. However, in order to balance "edginess" & deliver comfort, smooth and soft forms had to be implemented. Result of striking appearance & comfort. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Strabo Sofa has a very dynamic shape with a sense of motion, as if it is stretching and pulling it self in every direction. This appearance also makes it look very modern and elegant - reflecting our fast lives and dynamic lifestyles. With these qualities in mind, the Strabo Sofa potentially gives a fresh & recognisable look. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The interaction with Strabo Sofa & Chair would be a comfortable and relaxing experience. Both sofa & chair are curved creating this semi-enclosure which gives a slight sent of privacy & a feeling of being embraced. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Both Sofa & chair would be made from combination of wood & fiberglass in order to fulfill the smooth and complex curvature of the furniture. Soft elements, such as the padding would be made from foam and upholstered with distinct fabrics & leathers. Furniture colour scheme would be very flexible, allowing many different arrangements (refer to PDF). With this flexibility - classic, limited, seasonal editions could be released, constantly refreshing the range of this furniture. Similar to how we see Eames Lounge Chair taking many colour and finish variations. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Dimensions for both Strabo Sofa and Chair are approximate. Strabo Sofa - Total Length - 2520mm, Total Depth - 880mm, Total Height - 980mm. Strabo Chair - Total Length - 795mm, Total Depth - 760mm, Total Height - 1040mm. TAGS: Strabo Sofa, Strabo Chair, Strabo, Chair, Sofa, triangle, dynamic, motion, RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research for both - Strabo Sofa & Chair came along as I was working on this new store design for an emerging brand. This furniture was to be iconic and specific just for this one brand only. I kept a simple brands motto at the back of my mind - We are not afraid to dare! So with that I researched dynamic and striking installations, and narrowed down my search to geometric shapes. From all the forms I picked the most dynamic shape - triangle. Combined both the sharp edges & smooth organic forms and as a result - truly original shape of furniture was developed. CHALLENGE: The most challenging part of this project was the ability to merge both dynamic and sharp geometric forms and blend them hand in hand with organic and smooth curves. The reason why it was so challenging is because it simply didn't look good and balanced (PDF document). I sketched so many versions until I realised that there has to be a good definition between both sofa characteristics. Only after multiple 3D tests, fails and sketch templates was I able to come out with this striking sofa & chair.
