DESIGN NAME: Charax
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Snowboard
INSPIRATION: After designing apparel for some years, I wanted to get into product design and development. For my first project, I wanted to bring together my two passions, design and snowboarding. Having an apparel background I guess helped create the idea that a snowboard needs to be more than just some pictures forced in a space and rather give the shape that is already created an entire "piece" of design and simply making it more of what it already is and can be while staying true to the audience.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This is one of a few unique snowboard designs that I created to which has additional physical features with dimensional design to the board adding the the overall look and feel. Bringing the art and or brand to life.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: this snowboard does not necessarily perform better than others, however it is setting itself a part from all other boards in the innovation of bringing dimensional design features to the market, changing the overall look, style and feel of snowboards without ruining any performance use or enhancements.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: this project started and finished in San Jose, Ca in my house

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: board materials will consist of: wood core, topcoat, fiberglass, steel inserts for bindings, plastic base, metal edges, resin system, rubber foil. The butterfly thorax/ "physical design feature" is yet to be determined, however current options include: a hollow or solid carbon fiber mold. Hard rubber material added on after board is constructed or casted as part of the actual board shape itself.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: dimension will depend on the end user such as men, women or children

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: the research was on snowboard construction and materials but the most research was in constructing the methodology and end user material to create the dimensional design feature, in this case the butterfly thorax so that it does not add much if any weight or disrupt any performance.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part of the design was actually executing the dimensional design feature. I hesitate to say "executing" because it has yet to be physically prototyped and manufactured. However, concepting the idea with realistic materials and ride-ability was/is still the challenge.
