DESIGN NAME:
Memory Route

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Multimedia Platform

INSPIRATION:
Each month we watch on YouTube over six billion hours of video. On Twitter, however, we send four billion tweets per day and we post twenty-two billion photos on Instagram. Sharing is a typical consequence of an emotional impact, and leads most of us to share an event with several people at the same time. Share means leaving the track of a piece of our lives, it means fix in time a certain emotion tied to a particular event. It means creating a memory.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Memory route is a digital platform that allows users to relive in firsthand the memories recorded by other users. By creating interactive paths, the city becomes the stage of the stories told by those who lived them. The system consists of three parts: the web platform for the collection of the memories, the app that allows you to unlock the memories geo-located in the city and the Memory Hub that is the urban totem and the connection between the digital service and the city.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Memories are registered by the users on the web site, assembling multimedia files. These files, called fragments, are organized and pinpointed on an interactive map of the city, which becomes the path of memory. With the mobile app, the user selects a memory and follows its progress through the city by unlocking the file where the events happened. By interfacing the Memory Hub with a smartphone you can enjoy extracts of the memories placed in a larger area around the urban totem.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in January 2014 in Rome for System Design Course at ISIA ROMA and it finished in December 2014 as a Master Degree thesis in System Design. Memory Route won the Third Prize in Communication Design category at the National Arts Award.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The Memory Hub is the part of the project that has the largest number of technologies. Its two halves have different heights to suit the needs of different users. Both halves contain ultra wide twenty-seven inches monitors to fully exploit the height of the totem. Inside them are located subwoofers for media reproduction. The shells are made of aluminium while the inner shell is in compact polycarbonate, light and opaque to ensure the filtering of the interior lights.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Memory Hub dimensions are: width 1000 mm x depth 500 mm x height 2000 mm for the highest one; width 1000 mm x depth 500 mm x height 1700 mm for the shortest one. Website native resolution is 1920 x 1080 px. App native resolution is 1280 x 768 px. The website and the app have been created starting from sketches and by designing quick wireframes to realize an interactive prototype to study the user experience.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The project started with a university research on Urban Opportunities. We wondered what makes special a place instead of another, and we realized that what makes it special are the memories associated with it. So we have split the memories of women, men, boys etc. in digital medias and we created a platform that harboured them, and an app and a totem that would allow to relive these memories. The service is created with the aim to show everyday places with different eyes.

CHALLENGE:
The challenge was to make people understand the close relationship between the media that we produce and the places from which they are extracted. We have combined the features and the appearance of existing platforms in a new service and we have pushed users to share their memories and compose them spontaneously in a path through the city. The web platform and the app allow the creation and the enjoyment of memories while the Memory Hub is the sharing amplifier of the entire project.

NAME:
ISIA ROMA

PROFILE:
The ISIA of Rome, born in 1973 as historical experimental design school of the state, since many years has set up a careful rework of the conceptual paradigms of the design, arriving to the definition, in the second graduate level, of "Design of the Systems". This definition wants to deepen the sense of a constellation of meanings around the new geography of knowledge, technologies and creativity, in the contemporary society, the design attempts in particular way to the relational and systemic aspects in the human landscape, both material and immaterial. Systems Design sees forward the statements of the Sciences of the Complexity, the elaborations of the not linear thinking, and observes with much interest the principle of autopoiesis, of autorganization, facing the characteristics of emergence in a system. In such sense, our engagement is to carry a disciplinary contribution to these theories being part of a patrimony of experiences consolidated in the area of the product, the morphogenesis and above all of the Metadesign that in it lives very many years, being able to use the stimulating contribution mathematics and systemic courses of high profile.
