DESIGN NAME: Meze 99 Classics
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Headphones
INSPIRATION: Precious items handed down from generation to generation are objects to fall in love with. Why should electronics be any different? They can be high quality, beautifully crafted objects that acquire personal meaning for the user over time.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: They are the first fully serviceable headphones. This means that you can exchange any parts if that is ever necessary because they are assembled by high quality torx screws. No glue or plastic snap-in fixtures. The fact that they would have a long lifespan also makes them a sustainable product. Wood grain is as unique as finger prints thus making each pair a one of a kind. And in terms of functionality, Antonio Meze identified the top 3 most important issue users have with headphones: comfort, artificially tweaked frequencies and sound isolation and solved this issues by creating a headband that delivers even pressure for any head size, using soft memory foam in earcups and by tuning a balanced natural sound with the help of the internal architecture of the wood enclosure.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Keep them in your hands to feel the sturdy build and precise assembly. Enjoy the earcup's satin finished wood grain. Put them on, sit back, end enjoy your favorite sound of plucked strings, upbeat grooves or thumping beats while still looking classy. It's compatible with all 3.5mm jack equipped devices and works well with home audio as well as portable players or phones.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project started in June 2013 with first sketches and came to completion in May 2015 after many iteration and a lot of hard work. Tooling was finished in June 2015.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: It was a real challenge to produce the headphones just the way it was designed and without any compromises. The designer researched a lot in order to find the right material and technology for each component and to get a precise and durable assembly between wood, zinc and steel spring. There where many occasions to cut corners, to compromise, to save some cost by using plastic or rubber. But he didn’t. Antonio Meze made it just as if making it for himself.
CHALLENGE: Meze's aim was to change the perception of headphones as technical devices or as cheap plastic accessories and create a mature product to fall in love with: headphones that have a technical hint but are very elegant and wearable at the same time; A marriage of modern design with traditional crafts and elements with technical and aesthetic excellence; A product that targets those who already have a good sense of self , know what they want and expect to be treated accordingly.
