DESIGN NAME: y.O Zmart Chair
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chair
INSPIRATION: The convertible chair design, y.O, started with inspiration from early 20th century furniture designs and working early in my career in the office of Marcel Breuer, the last practicing master from the Bauhaus. The Wassily Chair and Corbusier’s Sling chair were inspiring examples of good design. This experience along with living in small urban living spaces in New York City, emerging global urbanization and a desire to contribute in new ways to manage natural resources combined to inspire a new type of chair , a rotational converting chair.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Chair has the unique ability to convert from a reclining position to an upright dining position in one motion without latches or hardware using only proportion, geometry and gravity while remaining in one piece as one object.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Chair has the unique ability to convert from a reclining position to an upright dining position in one motion without latches or hardware using only proportion, geometry and gravity while remaining in one piece as one object.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Schematic Design Initiation - December 2011
US Patent granted - October 28, 2014
Debut - 2015 ICFF with the support of Richlite/ecosupply.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The y.O Zmart Chair is designed to be made entirely from CNC cut flat Richlite panels of quarter inch, half inch or one and one quarter inch thickness. Richlite, made from phenolic resin and recycled paper, was developed at the end of WW II as a substitute for metal for the U.S. Navy. The material is strong and completely water resistant, doesn’t need finishing of any kind including paint, stain or sealer. The material is LEED certified, comes in various earth tone colors and sizes. The seat rotates on stainless steel sleeve and axel located on each side of the chair.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: DINING POSITION:
Width 558mm x Depth 558mm x Height 914mm, Weight 9.2 kg
LOUNGE POSITION:
Width 558mm x Depth 571.5mm x Height 698.5mm, Weight 9.2 kg
TAGS: chair, convertible chair, lounge chair, dining chair, mutiple use chair
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: All dimensions and ergonomic data from
Human Scale 1 2 3 by Neils Diffrient, Alvin Tilley & Joan Bardagly
CHALLENGE: First, the seat dimensions have to respond to both the dining position and the lounge position upon rotation. Secondly, locating the pivot point in the support piece affects both the dinning seat height and the lounge seat height from the floor in different proportionality. Thirdly, only and unless the position of the seat pivot point is high enough relative to the occupants hips does balance and stability occur. And lastly, there is the aesthetic challenge. The chair must look normal in both positions not odd, quirky, unbalanced or unattractive.
