| DESIGN NAME: Lab PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional Planter INSPIRATION: Showing relationships with a chemistry lab and life, LAB talks about how humans control nature and in contradistinction how nature takes hold of what humans have created. This ecosystem lives in between industry and nature. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: LAB brings and easy and stylish way to cultivate indoor plants. You can configure its size to fit different areas and its lights allow the plants to be in spaces with not enough natural light sources. It is a modular structure that allows you to play with different configurations of glass containers, which you can use as planters or light sources. The design considers containers for terrariums, hydroponics and for the traditional way of cultivation. The light system is installed in some containers so you can put it in different positions too. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The user is able to add extra pieces to the main module making the final structure as big as he wants. The plants are planted in the glass containers and then supported on the structure. LAB transmits order, simplicity and the feeling of being in control of the plants and their growth in a different space from its natural habitat. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Bronze casting and blown glass. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Structure. Module 1 (21cm x 17cm x 9cm), Module 2 (square bar 0.5cmx0.5cmx30cm), Module 3 (U - 14cm x 9cm). TAGS: human vs nature, lab planter, plants, bronze, light, laboratory RESEARCH ABSTRACT: After working with visual artists, the designer´s paradigm about functions of objects/products have changed, reinforcing the communicational function of design. In this case is the actual relationships between humans and nature. CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge for the designer was to translate all his thoughts about the coexistence of humans and nature into a functional object and to decide to what extent the design and production process should be chaotic or controlled. NAME: Diego León Vivar PROFILE: Diego is a passionate Peruvian industrial designer whom moved by curiosity to know different design areas, he has been working as an independent professional since graduating in 2011. Fascinated by the cultural richness of his country, he has traveled to different regions coexisting with ancestral traditions that remain alive, including craftsmanship. Part of this experience has been working together with different artisans, masters in 16 different traditional craft techniques which are held by teaching from father to son for generations. Betting on the value that craftsmanship provides in products and natural empowerment that this has on people who work in this field, Diego is currently dedicated to provide consulting services focused on handicrafts and traditional processes both private companies and the Peruvian government through the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism. In the same way, his work highlights the relationships between men next to industrial processes created by themselves and nature that always remains connected with traditional processes. This has brought to him a new attention of the communicative functions of design, opening the possibility to work some products/sculptures as an inner exploration. |
