DESIGN DETAILS |
DESIGN NAME: Jacobs Coffee
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Coffee Beans
INSPIRATION: The client wanted to package the product in a typical coffee bean bag but wanted something different that afforded them flexibility with the number of variants they wanted to bring to market, cost efficiencies and practicality.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This packaging is unique as it takes a conventional coffee bag and places a box style lid over the top to deliver a flat surface providing both functional stackability and large format space for branding and product differentiation. The lid itself employs winged engineering to hold it in place. The the wings reverse fold up against the side panels and then catch in place in the fold of the bag thus ensuring the lid can not slip off.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This is a unique presentation of a typical coffee bag. It provides the consumer with strong brand messaging and product differentiation defined by a distinctive colour and numbering system. The funtionality of the lid provides a flat surface for stacking of product and the integrity of the beans remain as the bags are sealed.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project was started in April 2013 and was completed in January 2014.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Packaging Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: As a start up company the production costs and practicality played key roles in the overall design solution. With small production runs the bags were printed with a rubber stamp, giving the client the flexibilty to order small quantities. The lids shared a number of colours enabling a cost effective print matrix to be established enabling the client to batch order the variants as required. The lids were printed 3 PMS colours with an over all satin varnish.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The lids are 110mm wide,55mm high and 67mm deep. They are printed with 3 PMS colours on 400um cellokarta, embossed and have a satin over all varnish applied.
TAGS: Coffee, Premium coffee, Coffee bags, Coffee branding
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: There were a number of limitations from the outset so the project required a few processes to arrive at the solution. The bag tapered and the client wanted it flat and initially the only solution was to sticker over the top of the bag to hold it in place. They wanted the bag to be seen so it wasn't as simple as just boxing the whole bag, so we thought we would half box the bag and all of the criteria were met with that very simple solution.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part of the project was to deliver a solution that met all of the clients criteria, was cost effective and simple. The client wanted the top of the bag to be presented flat and for the top of the bag to be kept in position without having to adhere anything. The solution was a perfect marriage of form, function and aesthetic appeal.
