| DESIGN NAME: Cortesia PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional Chair INSPIRATION: This Chair was inspired in a natural line of a human hair. Due it organic shape and light weight, by simple rotations of the object, different positions and ways to sit on it appears. It can be described as An Inhabited Sculpture. The creative challenge was to materialize that continuous line as a piece of design, finding the balance between it dimensions and angles, it functionality and elegance. The meaning of the name Cortesia, it reflects the way this piece interacts emotionally with people. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Through careful rotation of its thoroughly curved shapes, numerous options are revealed, as are various resting surfaces for it users or it accessories. This chair was designed, not only in the mathematical dimension, but above all, in the existential dimension. It aims to defy and engage us emotional, subconscious and intellectually. The studio believes that design based on sincerity, is what creates art. Devotedly responding to specific questions, not resorting to previous solutions. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: By simple rotations of the object by the user, due the asymmetry of it designs, one can find different positions of the same object. Due these different positions, the user can find different ways to sit on it. It results in several chairs in one object only. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The original drawings were done, among another few hundred chairs sketches, in the artist sketch books during a solitary travelling around the world before he started to practice as an Architect. Now, after 15 years of practice, life gave him the opportunity to start developing them. The submitted model is the chosen one developed during the last months until a few days ago. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The proposal of the structure is to be done in fibber glass, in order to find a balance with the desired object strength and it light weight . The final finishing aspect is proposed to be in a shinning bright colour, to emphasize the concave and convex surfaces with the reflections on it organic shape. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The dimensions of this object it varies depending in witch of the different positions it is. They were studied as one but separately at the same time, depending on the different ways to sit on it. TAGS: An inhabited sculpture, one object, diferent positions, several ways to sit on it RESEARCH ABSTRACT: More than a research process, it was a process of concentration in canalising inspiration. The objective was to meditate in the uniqueness shape of that particular line of a hair that captured the artist attention, and how could be transformed into a chair design. The hair was photographed, drawn on paper and improved meticulously until final lines were found. Them, a computer scale model was done and experimented with human dimensions on it in all posible dimentions. CHALLENGE: The creative challenge was to focus in a line of a human hair and design a chair out of it. The obstacle of the development was to find the balance of the piece as a whole. The historical perspective is based in today’s minimization process of material goods, therefore a concept of designing one chair with different positions to sit on it. For this, an accurate research about ergonomics and design history was done. It´s about a provocative project that invites to rethink the design approach as a free gesture of creative consciousness.
