DESIGN NAME: Threaded Ed.17, The Seele of Seventeen
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Magazine
INSPIRATION: We are committed to producing a ‘printed space’ that encourages expanded practice to occur by means of collaboration. Threaded’s inclusive of design work, artwork and collaborative endeavours/projects. Side-by-side, page-to-page – practitioners are invited to exhibit, are profiled, display their practices, and reflect on the nature of what they do through interview and design. These insights into a range of practitioners and their practices bridge a gap between established and emerging practice.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Threaded is for creatives by creatives – curated using the construct of the interview and the medium of print as vehicles to disseminate insights into practice. Threaded’s editorial ethos combines occurrences between the thematic and the conceptual ideation. Interestingly, personal references emerge, in awaiting the birth of Kyra’s son we examined Threaded as an adolescent using the three counterparts of the human personality which are part of Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic personality theory.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Threaded is an international collaborative project that curates insights into practice through discussion and presentation of practice, thinking and process.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in August 2014 and was printed for international distribution in December 2014.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Collaborators are encouraged to exploit critical conventions of interview constructs whilst simultaneously being humorous, highly self-conscious, disruptive or commandeering. Practitioners profiled lead and present themselves, as they want to be seen. Often the designer/artist is positioned as both interviewer and interviewee. A new type of unstructured interviewing occurs and a self-authored case study individualises a self-critical and reflective approach in context of an editorial stance.
CHALLENGE: The overarching layout design undertaken by Threaded has to embed the artistic methodologies, sensibilities and attitudes of collaborators. Developing a cohesive design system is critical as is the development of a theme – whilst practitioners can circumvent or intercept the conceptual theme or consciously ignore it, Threaded uses it to unite and synthesize content. The visual language used to convey this theme was a creative challenge, as was uniting three different visual personas into one.
