DESIGN NAME: Primeval Expressions
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Water and Spirit Glasses
INSPIRATION: An egg - the most absolute natural shape. A drop of liquid. Symbiosis of two natural materials: crystal glass and ancient wood - xylite. Preservation of natural and cultural heritage.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Simple egg-shaped crystal glasses cut in a sloped shape. They joyfully rock on their roundness while maintaining the stability through thoughtful arrangement of materials. Complemented by softly designed coasters from walnut or xylite for single or three glasses, an elegant ellipse-shaped walnut tray for ten glasses and a finger-food tray. Glasses can be used also without coasters. The integrity of the story is presented by additional elements of the gift packaging.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Glasses can be used with coasters or without them. With their rocking they create a relaxed and fun atmosphere while conforming perfectly to your palm when held. Thin, elegant, light trays are nice to hold in hands to serve finger food and aperitifs, especially cognac. When the trays lie on the smooth table surface, they are rotatable owing to the special form of the cross sections, fine surface treatment of the wood and balanced centre of gravity.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in May 2008, when the glass shape was developed by Mateja Krasovec Pogorelcnik in the designers workshop in cooperation with Glass Factory Rogaska, Slovenia. The shape was model protected and later developed in Primeval Expressions Collection by Stories Design trademark. The collection is already in production and prepared for the market. All pieces are made in Slovenia by Slovenian glass and wood masters.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The glass is a result of teamwork of experienced glass masters of Glass Factory Rogaska, Slovenia. It is hand made by the traditional glass-blowing method of top quality crystal, with typical gloss and a rich metallic sound. Xylite and walnut coasters and trays are handmade by skilled wood artisans. Xylite is a rare, 2,5 million years old wood with a high aesthetic value, from the mines of Velenje, Slovenia. As it is very sensitive, xylite can only be processed by the most experienced workers.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Glasses are smaller - 0,5 dl, or bigger - 1 dl, from lead or fine crystal, with coasters made of xylite or walnut. Different packaging in gift boxes from the Stories Design trademark are completed with an enclosed booklet of short artistic stories on the design background and a certificate, both of which are meant to raise awareness on the meaning and mission of the design, handicrafts, and the preservation of natural and cultural heritage.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The product should represent xylite in the most expressive, sensitive, natural and useful way: made from one piece of material, softly handmade, with silky touch. Due to its dark colour and characteristic wood structure, this material looks very elegant in combination with crystal glass. The result is simply designed egg-shaped glass in symbiosis with xylite coaster that looks like a shadow of the glass. The simplicity is kept also at trays: they are rotatable due to their smooth elliptic shape.
CHALLENGE: The product should awake primeval feelings in us: contact with nature, simplicity of life, the search for balance and harmony. Considering this fact an egg-shape is a major challenge to research and apply in an appropriate, balanced way. Made from crystal glass, no edges contained, it works as a natural lens reflecting the surrounding, what is another challenge for photographer. Taking representative photos to catch the impression in reality is very complex.
