DESIGN NAME: LumiFi
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lighting Control Software
INSPIRATION: After working in the lighting industry for 15 years, German-trained architect, Beatrice Witzgall was frustrated with the complexity and costs of controlling lighting. She was always fascinated with the properties of transformative spaces that respond to people's activities and functions. With the Internet of Things bringing connected lighting to the mass market, Witzgall founded LumiFi in an effort to bring sophisticated and smart lighting to everyone.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: LumiFi is a design and technology-centric company enabling people and businesses to unlock the full potential of connected lighting through a new lighting control software. Incorporating smart LED wireless bulb technology and the expertise of award-winning designers, Lumifi offers customizable lighting moods in hotels, homes and offices. The unique technology enables users to experience fully composed lighting scenes with the simple tap of their smartphone.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: By turning the smartphone into a convenient remote, a user only needs to outfit rooms with wireless enables LED light bulbs or switches, which are then connected to a WiFi bridge. The smartphone communicates with the bridge via the Wi-Fi network, enabling light control.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Started as a division of i3D, inc in 2013 before officially launching as LumiFi in 2014 in New York City

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Combining Witzgall’s technical background with years of experience creating lighting scenes for hospitality settings and superyachts, LumiFi developed a patent-pending process that identifies the location, type of lighting fixture and illumination levels. The team analyzed the technical parameters of lighting including; wattage, lumen output, beam spreads, color temperature and color attributes; human biological responses, and design factors spanning from architecture to graphics and product design, to develop the software and user friendly mobile application.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: LumiFi is the only solution that focuses on creating an experience based on various elements of scientific research that shows how certain lighting can trigger physiological and emotional responses. The app uses scientifically-proven lighting hues to create various preset moods, with additional customizable options. LumiFi’s patent-pending algorithm generates lighting scenes by applying different values of lighting to different fixtures in one user-friendly interface.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The lighting designers behind LumiFi researched the effect light has on human behavior and emotion to determine the best curated lighting solution for each pre-set mood. Studying wattage, lumen output, beam spreads, color temperature and spacial design factors, LumiFi is able to enter a room with wireless LED lightbulbs installed, and establish the optimal illumination level, hue, and beam spread for each individual lighting fixture to create a truly personalized and beneficial lighting experience in residential and hospitality settings.
CHALLENGE: For decades, lighting controls have been the business of programmers, 3rd party installers, electricians, and lighting designers, almost exclusively. Now, connected lighting controls have the true potential to be a Do-It-Yourself technology that is affordable and accessible for everyone. The most difficult part of the design of LumiFi is transforming this very complex, disruptive technology, into something that is as fun and simple as possible to move from the exclusivity of early adoption, to mass market acceptance.
