| DESIGN NAME: Voronoi PRIMARY FUNCTION: Jewelry INSPIRATION: This project began as a way to tap on the research of a previous project, which was based on the Voronoi Diagram. Hundreds of beautiful drawings and sketches that did not deserve to stay on the page were begging to bring them to life. Jewelry design was the perfect way to do so and at the same time fulfill a long overdue dream. The inspiration for this collection comes from a variety of themes, half-finished origami shapes, bubbles, and other geometric shapes related to mathematics and nature …all these represented by the Voronoi diagram. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This is the first of a series of products that originates from the Voronoi diagram research. These Jewelry Sets capture the essence of the Voronoi diagram, which it's based on the partitioning of a plane into different regions. This is a copper and brass collection, produced in collaboration with expert jewelers from Madrid, which highlights the beauty of geometry . The complete collection has a strong personality; the lightness of the design, the pure lines and exquisiteness in the cut makes it perfect for any ocassion. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: - PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This proyect started in June 2014 in Madrid and is ongoing. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Voronoi collection it's made of brass and copper. All the designs are first engraved into the brass or copper sheet, and later are cut and polished by hand. For the production of this project it was first considered lasercut as the obvious choice due to the size of the pieces and specially the thickness of the material (0'8 mm) but as we began testing it turned out to be too aggressive for such a delicate piece. Handmade was yet another feature that made it all the more special and unique. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Total length of necklace: 32mm Total lenght of brooch: 10 cm Thickness: 0'8mm TAGS: Jewelry, wearable bubbles, origami, brass, copper, handmade, design, geometry RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This is the first product we've produced of the Voronoi series, (lighting, jewelry and textile design) that all originate from the Voronoi diagram research. The first step was Lighting Design, here we started with all the sketches and modelling. Trying to find the way to give geometric volume to a single sheet of paper. This lead to origami, geometry, and many full notebooks. After a couple of months the production got a bit stuck so we decided to jump from the first to the second step which was Jewelry design, to get some fresh air and recharge the spirit. For the jewelry project we took all those drawings and started to think about materials, dimensions, and transform the pencil drawings into metal drawings.
