PRIMARY FUNCTION: Trend Information
INSPIRATION: The inspiration for the global trend book comes from a dedicated global trend research by the BASF design team. The team collects ideas and impulses at fair, exhibitions and when doing on-spot consumer research. In cooperation with the agency RAUM MANNHEIM the design team works on a visual language to communicate the global trend statements in the book.
Objects, colors, textures in illustrations all serve as a starting point to create the narrative value of the visual language.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The global trend book Under the Radar is a unique communication tool that provides an annual, profound and structured overview on global color trends for the automotive industry. It aims at showing the significance and variations of color in different regional market and has established as a constant company for the designers of original equipment manufacturers by offering specific trend and color information together with 65 color samples.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Global Trend Book is a customer communication tool. It show trend and automotive colors and explains the trend relevance of the individual colors. The automotive desigers can use the Global Trend Book as a reference for their design work and consult it for background information.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in October 2013 in Beijing and was finished 2014 in Muenster. It was established at various customer color shows in Norht America, Asia-Pacific and Europe.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Laser Cut Technology for bookelt covers was used to show image material partially in reference to the title Under the Radar.
Paper: Stardream, Heaven Sofmatt, Metallic look to evoke technical context.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The trend books dimensions are: 240 mm x 265 mm x 40 mm. Divided into six booklets, which are compiled in a slip case, the book shows and explains six trend worlds – three with global relevance and three with a specific local focus.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In the first stage of research, the design team filters through important observations to identify potential drivers of trends. This first synopsis prioritizes trend topics, manifesting a clear vision of future color designs.
Translating important and relevant trends into automotive colors is based on a deep understanding of the changing needs of the target customer groups. This expertise – gained over years of trend research – is accompanied by a broad knowledge of BASF paint and pigments .
CHALLENGE: The creative challenge was to create a formate which displays trends and colors in a very user friendly way, to build a bridge from trend observations to the colors and to create a visual language which for trends which work in different cultural contexts.
