DESIGN NAME: Skræp
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Pendant
INSPIRATION: Inspired by the chaotic beauty and futility of crumpled scrap papers and fascinated by the idea of recreating its materiality and formality with precious metal, Skraep records the exploration of designing a digital force model with the ability to accurately calculates random palm-force to create the crumpling dynamics of papers. By fusing with traditional lost wax casting jewelry making technique, each outcome of this process is unique and unpredictable, thus creating a sense of mysterious.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design Skraep transforms the unique materiality of a crumpled scrap paper into an elegant charm/pendant. It recreates the form with precious metals by combining cutting-edge 3D printing technology and traditional lost wax casting jewelry making techniques. The digital model calculates the flow of chaotic palm forces while each outcome generated is unique and unpredictable, thus creating a proud new identity to crumpled paper formality with an intimation of uselessness.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The pendant catches the unique materiality and formality of a crumpled paper by combining digital modeling, 3D printing and traditional jewelry making techniques. The flow of force can be controlled by digital modeling while the stimulation of interactive process with paper is random, thus making each outcome unpredictable and unique. The choice of precious metals creates a contrast between futility and luxury. A cool touch for all dressing-ups.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project Started in December 2014 and finished in Feburary 2015.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The digital model was created using a physics engine to stimulate the chaotic crumbling force by palm and fingers. Only the forces are controlled while the interactive process and outcome are arbitrary.
The model is then 3D printed in wax.
The wax model is casted in gold by lost wax method.
The artifact is polished into a wet sheen finish.
Iteration of steps 2 to 4 was applied to perfection of product.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Diameter 25mm (Width 25 mm x Depth 25 mm)
Height 24mm
Thickness 7mm
Material: 18K Gold (choice of other precious metals: sterling silver, white gold, rose gold, platinum, etc. applicable)
Weight: 21 gram

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Researched:
a.Physics engine and reactor on palm-force stimulation
b.Characteristics of varies paper material, fibers
c.Statistical mechanics and packing models that simulate paper formation and structure
Combined digital modeling, 3D printing and lost wax method to push the limits of object, s.a. minimal thickness and size
Iteratively refined the stimulation model to accurately reflect soft and hard crease of paper when crumpled by force Used Rhinoceros, Grasshopper and Kangaroo Physics
CHALLENGE: The most challenging part was to create a physics engine to objectively capture the extraordinary mathematical and structural complexity of crumpled paper.
Extensive research has been done to create it, and intensive iteration was practiced during the refinement steps to reach perfection of the stimulation process that generates the architectural inside structure and surface crease and folds of crumpled paper, whereas the first versions were closer to crumpled aluminum sheet.
