DESIGN NAME: Thor
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Spotlight
INSPIRATION: Reduce to the minimum expression the shapes and sizes of this lighting fixture. Go to the essence of a lighting projector and its functions. Our goal has been to achieve a minimalist track light, with a maximalist performance.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Thor is a LED spotlight, designed by Ruben Saldana, with a very high flux (up to 4.700Lm), consumption of only 27W to 38W (depending on the model), and a design with optimal thermal management that only uses passive dissipation. This makes Thor stand out as a unique product in the market. Within its class, Thor has compact dimensions as the driver is integrated into the luminary arm. The stability of its centre of mass allows us to install as many Thor as we wish without causing the track to tilt.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Thor is a LED high performance spotlight ideal for environments with strong needs of luminous flux. Thor has a luminous efficiency output of 90% (over the gross lumens of its LED) and effectiveness up to 137Lm/w. Its colour rendering index (up to CRI>90) offers high fidelity colour representation. Thor uses different light beams (17º, 28º and 40º). It has various accessories to customise this beam, such as the ‘Anti-glare honeycomb louver’, the ‘Anti-glare screen’ and the ‘Elliptical refractor’.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Design project started at 2014 beginnings. It was entirely developed by Ruben Saldana (Arkoslight's head of in-house design) during that year.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We research the aesthetic trends in interior design main stakeholders, such as decorating magazines, journals in design, etc. Our goal was to get the aesthetic trends and transform them into design values to apply to our new luminaire. Our methodology was to observing market and competitors, systematization of findings, and interpretation of the results to synthesize the design guidelines. Also, we sought the integration of design and electronics for a perfect combination of functionality, aesthetics and performance.
CHALLENGE: Our goal was to design an LED spotlight with passive heat sink (without ventilator) that delivers over 4.500Lm and expresses elegance and minimalism. The power and the discreteness, together. It all, with the highest technical lighting requirements and customization options.
