DESIGN NAME: Couple
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chair
INSPIRATION: The main design of the Couple chair has been inspired by the ancient Persian terracotta/pottery motives. Those motives are usually four legged which is the quality that creates the stability and strength needed as a base in designing a chair.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The fact that Chairs are among the most commonly used items in day to day life makes them one of the mainly designed items as well. In my opinion just like every unique human being, each chair has its own personality. Accordingly at this project we tried to clearly present this characteristic to the users. The couple chair design is based on a male/female feature which is evidently visible in its profile. In addition to the seating function, this pair of chairs has the handbag/coat hanger details which are located at the back to keep them functional yet out of the way.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: To be used in living areas, coffee shops, restaurants and other inside spaces.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in February 2013 in Tehran and finished in January 2014 in Tehran
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The main frame of the chair is designed to be made of Beech wood. Tongue and groove joints have been used to attach the wooden parts. The seating area is made up 10 millimeter thick sand blasted glass which has been attached to the main wooden frame by a metal part.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 450 mm x Depth 600 mm x Height 1040 mm .

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: A great amount of research has been done on the subject of ancient Persian pottery motives prior to design this pair of chairs. Other research subjects of this project were biology, Gestalt and Ergonomy.
CHALLENGE: My biggest challenge in this project was the convention of my inspirations from the pottery motives to the 3 dimensional frameworks of the chair concept, while keeping their identity intact. Considering these motives are coming from the ancient Persia and are prehistoric, I tried to maintain their abstract and primitive sense.
