DESIGN NAME:

Stool
INSPIRATION:
My goal was to come up with a relatively simple to manufacture design that appeared complex but was derived from basic geometric shapes. The circle formed the basis for the design.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Ane stool is a solid timber stool with a powder coated steel frame.The seat is formed through the unique use of multiple pieces of one shape of wood positioned and cut in a dynamic way. The simple placement of three geometric circles allows the Ane timber stool to be cut in a way to give the appearance of a complex furniture piece.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The Ane stool is angled slightly higher at the back so that the person sitting is drawn to a natural seated position. The struts of timber roll over on each side and narrow with a circular cut toward the front for a comfortable sitting position with either both legs to the front or one off to the side.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project commenced the sketching stage in 2008 in Australia. Early prototypes were completed in Colombia before the final design was completed in Australia in 2013.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The original concept was based on bending aluminium rectangular steel tube but as the design progressed for a softer visual finish, timber was the preferred choice.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Research for Ane was based on final material selections. A lot of research was conducted at the prototype stage especially into the use of plantation or certified timber. The steel frames thickness was researched and tested to enable sufficient strength but also to take into consideration the viability of the stool for shipping purposes due to weight. The end user breakdown cycle was also considered. Although designed to be durable and as a piece of furniture to be kept for a life time, the ease of deconstruction for recyclable purposes was important. The final piece was designed so that it could be packed and easily shipped with minimal effort for the end consumer to attach the legs and use.
CHALLENGE:
Different frames were tried during development to come up with an easy to manufacture, durable frame that did not diminish the aesthetics of the seat.

Designs are created and refined with close relationships to manufacturers and craftspeople to incorporate key aspects of function, distinctness and sustainability. The designs often become an amalgamation of traditional skills with modern technologies.
