DESIGN NAME: Torchia
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lighting and Charging Unit
INSPIRATION: Inspired by the lack of a durable, portable emergency unit, the concept is created for both lighting and charging.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Like a handy flashlight in emergencies, Torchia is a solar LED lamp/charger that fits into several needs in multiple usages. Charged by photovoltaic panels in four wings, Torchia produces energy without any dependency on other energy systems. Suitable for outdoor activities, it also charges other devices via USB. Created as a multipurpose tool that is light yet robust, it is a lifesaver in size of an A3 paper. Also efficient in emergency situations such as car accidents or natural disasters, it can be used as a flashlight for the warning.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Product is charged during the day and could be used in the night as well. It could provide 6.5 hours of light, and could charge an iPhone within 1.5 hours.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The product can be stuck in soft ground with its foldable stakes at the bottom. The system continuously charges itself and produces energy with the photovoltaic panels on four wings. Panels are two sided and other sides of the panels are reflective surfaces. It consists of 7 LED lights of 3.5 watts, 2 batteries with 24 volt DC and 2 USB outputs. Lighting is programmable and flashing or stable light options can be chosen. ABS plastic was used as the main material.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Efficiency of solar power and batteries were the main importance as the product should be compact, durable and effective in emergency situations. High performance and flexible use was aimed to achieve a long lasting use.
CHALLENGE: The challenge was mainly the study of the requirements of the different scenarios and cases during emergency situations. The product was designed to response a variety of problems and needs within outdoor use.
