DESIGN NAME: Parabosol
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Water Cleaning Unit
INSPIRATION: Inspired by the abundance of the sun power in contrast with the scarcity of drinkable water, this project aims to enable water access for distant communities.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Parabosol Water Cleaning Unit is developed as an innovative solution towards deep rural water supply to amplify the voices of rural communities who suffer from a lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation- a basic human right.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Parabosol is basically a solar powered water treatment system, a portable water treatment unit which can be setup anywhere in remote areas. This system achieves purifying water by using parabolic mirror which boils water at high temperature, not industrially but individually for the first time. The purpose of the parabolic mirror is to collect the sun's energy over as wide an area as possible and focus into a smaller area. Filtration is done firstly by sand filter and after boiling by carbon filter. First sand filter catches the sand particles and then the carbon filter is used to remove odor dissolved gases from water. Between the two filtrations, the sand filtered water collected in a water container at a focus of parabolic mirror where purification process is done. The concave mirror rise the temperature up to 400 Celsius degrees which is enough to convert the water into steam and increase the speed of the process. Steam coming from the tank behind parabolic mirror condensate in bronze spine placed above carbon filter. The system consists of 4 containers: one contaminated water container, one purification container and two clean water container. Their capacities are in order of; 20 liters, 170 liters and 85 liters. Parabosol containers have one each taps and to prevent leaking out, the container which is not in use placed upside-down so do its tap.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: It was designed in December 2014 in Ankara.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Besides well performed features, materials used in the system are considered heedfully. By thinking the interactions of the parts in closed system, between clean water containers and parabolic mirror, felt cloth surface is used to avoid scratch. Injected PP, bent steel and felt cloth are used as main materials.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: 1.8 million people die every year from contaminated waterborne diseases, including 90% of children under 5. As this situation is no longer bearable, different types of water purification systems have developed around the world to cope with this important issue. However, they have some disadvantages like they can introduce harmful carcinogenic elements into the drinking water supply that can become toxic over time and have unpleasant or dangerous side effects and most of them just remove biological threats such as bacteria instead of chemical and radioactive contamination and they produce lower quality water for most amount of energy.
CHALLENGE: Clean water scarcity or lack of safe drinking water is among the world's leading problems to be faced by rural societies and the world in the 21st century. This critically important problem affects more than 1 billion people globally, meaning that one in every six people lack access to safe drinking water. Every day in rural communities and poor urban centers, hundreds of millions people suffer from a lack of access to clean, copious supply of water for drinking, cooking, bathing, cleaning etc. Both adults and children walk long distances about 3 to 4 kilometers daily, wait for the long queues at the point of taps and carry heavy containers on their heads 20 to 25 liters per trips.
