DESIGN NAME: Yuka
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Shower Tray
INSPIRATION: Inspired by beauty of the nature and its richness, the Yuka shower tray merges features of wood and stone. A seemingly cold dolomite rock is softened by a matt structure of a wood. To obtain such natural surface, the designer created a mat made from a hand-brushed larch wood.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Yuka has two unique properties that distinguish it from other cast marble shower trays, namely its structure and outflow construction. The major innovation in Yuka shower tray is a dolomite cover with a gap outlet, which is a novelty among cast marble products. In terms of its structure, the innovative application of wood structure creates anti-slip surface that is key to users safety. The material absorbs warmth and ensures comfort of use. Finally, the matt finish and two-coloured surface constitute some other innovative features.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Yuka shower tray has a dolomite cover with a gap outlet, which is a novelty among cast marble products. This effect, in turn, is possible thanks to cast marble technology, in which Yuka is produced. The material absorbs warmth and ensures comfort of use. The application of wood structure creates anti-slip surface. It has a matt finish and a two-coloured surface. The cast marble technology allows to give Yuka various colours, which makes it well suited for different bathroom designs.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in June 2014 in Poznan and finished in December 2014. Yuka was exhibited at Arenadesign in February 2015.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Yuka is made of cast marble, which results in unique appearance. During the manufacturing process dolomite powder is mixed with polymer resin, which gives its final flexibility and strength. The material is a composite that merges all favourable technological features of its ingredients. The outer layer of a product is made of gelcoat, hardened resin with pigment and particles of quartz.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 1200mm x Depth 800mm x Height 35mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The objectives of the research were the following: (i) integrated outflow; (ii) anti-slip surface; and (iii) nature inspired surface. Hence, the research had challenges in terms of construction and design. During the design process various design thinking methods were used, such as mind mapping, brainstorming, scenarios, story board, persona's, mockups and prototypes. All our objectives were achieved, in terms of design and construction, leading to innovation in cast marble technology.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part of this design activity was to implement a complete design process. This requires collaborative and multidisciplinary approaches that take into account design methods. It was critical to decide which of the design methods were best suited to improve innovation and problem solving processes and at which stage of those processes design methods had to be introduced.
