DESIGN NAME: Slash Lamp
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lighting object
INSPIRATION: When an object is designed? When an object is precious, particular? What is broken and what is new? What means the result of a mechanical intervention (more or less violent on an object)? What is an vulgarized object?"/" Lamp is an object that gives the chance of choice. A subjective and personal choice. It is an object at the middle of two opposite state. Intervention or non-intervention places it in one of them.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The main intent of this object was to provoke the user and to establish a personal relationship between the lamp and its end user, making it more "valuable" to him. Given the possibility to choose between breaking it or leaving it intact is meant to establish that personal, powerful relation. It empowers the owner, leaving him with the power of making a decision, to choose between either one of two opposite attitudes: action / inaction. This is already a personal choice. I looked to show the esthetic of filtered light passing trough broken reinforced concrete. The cork inside is meant to protect the LED lights if you chose to break it.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: A stone comes with this concrete lamp so the user can smash the shade to reveal the reinforcing steel mesh. The user has the choice to leave the lamp as they find it, after unpacking, or use the rock to smash away chunks of the concrete to expose the wire mesh and light bulb within.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project lasted 5 months from the first sketches to production. It started in January 2014 in Bucharest and it ended in May 2014 in Bucharest. It was presented at Romanian Design Week 2014 in May.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The lamp is suspended from the ceiling by a textured cord, attached to a carabiner and spool to enable its height to be adjusted.
The lampshade is produced by pouring concrete into a silicone mould and over the wire mesh. Once set, the concrete form is then air dried and polished smooth.
Materials: reinforced concrete, cork, LED, birch plywood.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Concrete tube dimensions: 110 mm x110 mm x 180 mm; beech plywood spool dimensions: 110mm x 110mm x 105mm
TAGS: serial / unique; esthetic/ unaesthetic; impersonal/ personal; new/ broken
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I had to study different mixtures of cement with sand, so that I could obtain a concrete which had to be soft enough to be broken by a stone, but in the same time , to be strong enough to prevent cracks during handling.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part of the project was to find a way to be able to center the wire mesh in the middle of the 9 mm thick concrete wall .
