| DESIGN NAME: Netatmo Welcome PRIMARY FUNCTION: Indoor Home Security Camera INSPIRATION: A large generation of kids spend time alone after school. Parents return late from work, where their days are overloaded. How can they know effortlessly if their children are home safely? This everyday problem inspired creating a revolutionary home camera: Welcome. Thanks to its unique face recognition technology, it recognizes who it sees and sends a notification with the persons name. The user knows instantly when his loved ones, such as his elderly parents or his children, are home. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Welcome is a smart home security camera with face recognition. When family members pass in front of the camera, it sends their names to the users smartphone. Welcome also notifies about strangers. Its sophisticated technology is hidden in its exceptionally slim and buttonless aluminum body. A fine black plastic piece blends with the cameras lense and covers also elegantly the infrared LED and microphone. Welcomes design is non intrusive and elegant, unlike traditional home security cameras. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: As Welcome is buttonfree, all interaction happens in the companion App: see who is currently home, access live stream and review past footages. Welcome highly respects the users privacy: individual privacy settings can be set for each person, thanks to face recognition. This means for example that video recording for the partner can be disabled. Further, all data is stored privately on a local SD card. This privacy is also reflected in Welcomes non intrusive and harmonious design. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The camera is an intensive 1 year long project, engaging our most dedicated software and hardware teams, based close to Paris, France (Boulogne-Billancourt). PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Materials: Anodized aluminum body ABS white plastic piece PMMA optical black plastic, infrared transparent SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Camera size: 45mmx45mmx155 mm Locally embedded processors and intelligence TAGS: timeless, elegant, buttonless, lean, minimalist, pure, harmonious RESEARCH ABSTRACT: A lot of research has been undertaken in the field of image processing and computation, to optimize powerful face detection and recognition algorithms for the cameras light and energy efficient platform. The camera hence processes locally its video flux, to provide a reactive and privacy oriented face recognition experience. CHALLENGE: A lot of development was required to fit the cameras powerful face-recognition technology and high-end optics into the slim 45 mm diameter aluminum shape. This construct also requires a very efficient heat dissipation, since IP cameras can have heat spots on their surface. The heat conduction has been optimized to take full advantage of its aluminum body.
