DESIGN NAME: Tulpi-seat
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chair
INSPIRATION: Everyone knows tulips. They are the jewels among our flowers, a great joy to many of us. A typical Dutch icon. They are a great inspiration to many artists and designers, including me. And I want to sit on a clean and dry seat in the public space. Because of this interesting feature, the design prevents the Tulpi from being exposed to outside elements like rain, bird droppings or leaves.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The eye-catching Tulpi-seat, developed by Dutch designer Marco Manders, will add colour to any environment.
It is a perfect combination of design, ergonomics and sustainability with a huge fun factor!
The Tulpi-seat automatically folds when its occupant gets up, guaranteeing a clean and dry seat for the next user!
With full 360 degree rotation, the Tulpi-seat lets you pick your own view!
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Open the Tulpi by yourself and it will close itself automatically after use. The Tulpi can rotate around its axis at 360 degrees, which allows users to choose their own view.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The Tulpi has gone through a seven year development, concentrating on its design, ergonomic features and engineering process. It started in 2004 and was produced in 30th march 2011

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The synthetic material offers a high quality and long durability. It can be used for recycling and produce a minimal amount of waste. Polythene is not affected by bacteria, making the product durable. This thermoplastic, allowing the possibility to be melted down and can be used again for new products. Available in nine colors.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We did exploratory and testing research
We looked at the current streetscape in multiple cities.
Internet: if the design already existed.
We participated in a Dutch tv show to obtain observations and comments of a jury of experts, and reach a wider audience.
Due to environmental aspects we switched from composites to recyclable polyethylene.
Several prototypes were shown at various fairs and events.
Vandal proof and safety tests were also performed.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge was to keep the shape of a tulip and built in all features. Also to use a good and working fold-system. And now has the seat 'disappear'; in the backrest.
