DESIGN NAME: Sirin and Alkonost - the Keepers of life
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Scarf
INSPIRATION: Sirin and Alkonost - birds described in Russian mythological legends and tales. According to Russian folklore, Sirin is a big, strong, colorful bird with head and chest of a beautiful woman, stern face and a crown on its head. Sirin as the sea bird-maidens Sirena, with their beautiful songs lured sailors who, hearing their enchanting voices would forget everything on earth, following them into the realm of death. Russian Sirin was endowed with magical features of protective nature, personifing beauty, happiness and joy of life. Near Sirin, Slavs would often paint another mythical bird, Alkonost. Alkonost is the Bird of Dawn, it is depicted with hands and wings and a flower in its hand, which controls the wind and the weather. Into Russian mythos and folklore it is associated with the Slavic sun god Hors. Perhaps in the course of time the differences between the two mythological birds have been forgotten, and they merged into the single image of a fantastic bird, which, as a symbol of beauty, a Russian man saw as his ideal of goodness, beauty and happiness. As represented in ancient Slavic pagan art, the two birds are commonly depicted on the two sides of the same tree, branches or leaves. According to the studies, this is the first of the legends about the origin of the world. It is believed that among the vast expanses of the deep ocean, which was the beginning of all beginnings, stands a tall mighty tree, as the expression, familiar to many, goes: "On the Ocean Sea, on the isle of Buyan, there stands a moist strong Oak”. From the two birds, building their nest in the Oak, began a new life on Earth. The Tree of Life became a symbol of life, and, protecting the two birds, a symbol of good, procreation and family happiness, its image meant life and well-being.
