| DESIGN NAME: Vetita PRIMARY FUNCTION: Letter Opener Pen INSPIRATION: A letter opener is not just a practical tool to open letters but it is also an elegant or humorous accessory for the desk and gift. I sought inspirations from objects related to writing, and I chose a normal pencil which is the most standard tool to write words as an inspiration for my letter opener work. Then, I came up with this catchphrase. "A pen to open words." UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Vetita is a pen to open words. I wanted to create a letter opener which is related to writing words. So, I took inspiration from the most familiar stationary for writing. Even though this object has a familiar form, it doesn’t function for writing, thus it may confuse people when they see it, and make them wonder if it is a mere decoration. But it is elegant yet practical as a letter opener. That is the surprise and humour I want to create. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Vetitia, the elegant, transparent letter opener, brings clarity to the work environment through its subtle, soothing mimicry of nature's simplicity. Just how a clear crystal refracts light like a prism, showcasing every colour of light, this pen knife magnifies correspondence into a lucid state; breaking down messages into individual, precious words that allow the recipient to appreciate the linguistics of the sender while representing the very instrument used to communicate. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Vetita was developed in Milan. This work was exhibited in Milan Design Week in April 2014, and Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Etienne in March 2015. |

There are practical ones, funny ones, and decorative ones. After this research, I realised that a letter opener is not just a practical tool to open letters but it is also an elegant or humorous accessory for the desk and gift. CHALLENGE: In order to create a different letter opener and not to design just "a unique looking" one like those many letter openers existing in the market, I decided to put a story in my letter opener project. I thought the best story would be something related to writing. So, I looked for the story for my letter opener and came up with this catchphrase. "A pen to open words." The brand has collaborated with several design studios in Italy, and worked on projects for companies in Italy, Germany, USA, China, and Japan through collaborations. The works cover product design, interior design, graphic design, and art direction. In 2015, Hiraoka co-founded Japanese International Design Award and works as a director of the award.
