| DESIGN NAME: Phantom PRIMARY FUNCTION: Phantom Coat Rack INSPIRATION: Furniture is not just a mere component in the house, but also something staying with you for many years. That is why, I believe it's important to design simple and practical, yet humorous and playful furniture in your home to give you some comfort. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Phantom is a coat rack which consists of clear acrylic hooks, a clear glass basement and a wood stick. Because of its clear glass hooks, it can create an illusion that your coats on hooks look like they are in the air in a dark room as though you see a phantom there. And this coat rack can be assembled without using screws or glues, thus it is easy to transport, assemble, disassemble, and dispose. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The hook parts are polished transparent polished acrylic. By hanging coats, the existence of those hooks almost disappear, and they become invisible in the dark entrance or corridor at night. In this way, it creates an illusion that coats look like floating in the air as if phantoms are standing there. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This work was developed in Milan in 2013. I was interested in those built with separate pieces without using screws or glues, and I liked that smart aesthetics. CHALLENGE: The big challenge of this project was how I could bring humour in the entrance of houses. The brand has collaborated with several design studios in Italy, and worked on projects for companies in Italy, Germany, USA, China, and Japan through collaborations. The works cover product design, interior design, graphic design, and art direction. In 2015, Hiraoka co-founded Japanese International Design Award and works as a director of the award.
