| DESIGN NAME: Santander World PRIMARY FUNCTION: Urban Sculptures INSPIRATION: The spirit of this project was to involve the city of santander with artwork to celebrate a sporting competition on a global scale, in the same way as other projects, such as the cow parade. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Santander World is a group of sculptors that celebrate art and wanted to involve the city of Santander (Spain) in preparation for the World Sailing Championship Santander 2014. The project consisted in the union of five sculptures measuring 3.6 meters in height and with a base of 2, 5 m radius. They are made of a steel structure, treated for outdoor environments, by covering them with painted steel, all in solidarity with a concrete surface footing. Each of the sculptures conceptually represents each one of the 5 continents. Its theme is to represent peace, solidarity and goodwill among people of the world and shows Santander as an open city that welcomes everyone with open arms, regardless of race, sex, origin or condition . Each one of the artists worked with different aesthetic ideas and artistic techniques, as different as possible, to represent the diversity of cultures around the world. To symbolize the concepts described above, the artists have worked freely without conditions, to ensure the free and unique expression of their work OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: They are works of art made by different artists, are designed to be on the street at the sight of everyone. The artists did have to perform 20 design proposals, of which 5 were finally chosen to be performed on the sculptures. The idea was that each artist would work on a sculpture of steel resistant to the weather, for this, the artists did have to work with water repellent, washable and resistant to sun paints. Once exposed in the street, they became an icon of the city where all visitors and citizens seeking photographed to remember their visit to the city of Santander. Additionally, gift pieces inspired by the sculptures offered for sale in various shops in the city were made. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The sculptures are made of steel sheet 3mm thick, protected by 2 coats of polyuretane paint and 1 coat of epoxy anti-humidity paint. This is considered an optimal solution for the protection of steel sculptures in adverse weather conditions. The inner assembly is sized to withstand wind currents in extreme conditions. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Each sculpture weighs 1ton. The dimensions of each sculpture are: 2.50 x 3.60 x 0.60 m. TAGS: art, urban art, design, architecture, applied arts RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This urban art project was born with the desire to be a fun and celebrated event. The surprise was discovering the high impact it had on the people and society of Santander, 700,000 people visited the sculptures during the month of September and thousands of people were photographed with sculptures, as shown in the facebook project. Currently, the sculptures are already recognized as an icon of the city. Another surprise that this project has given us has been the creation of a Collection of designer objects inspired by the sculptures of Santander World. The author of the collection is the Puerto Rican artist Bernardo Medina. CHALLENGE: The project met with the following challenges: The development of an ambitious and innovative art project (something that had never been done before) in a city unaccustomed to urban art. The transportation of the sculptures, due to their height and weight from the workspace to their final destination. The contracting of competitive companies to adhere to the project that could manufacture the metal artwork in an optimal finished quality.
