DESIGN NAME: Brooklyn
PRIMARY FUNCTION: LED Task Light
INSPIRATION: The Brooklyn was designed as an elegant, functional task light, providing added utility without compromising objective beauty. Many lights' functionality detracts from their overall appearance; the goal in this project was for utility to be neither secondary nor inelegant. Another goal was to ensure that a high design light could also illuminate using the most innovative technology. The Brooklyn's usage of light panel technology ensures the light it casts is soft, smooth, and evenly distributed.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Brooklyn LED USB Task Light is a uniquely designed, sleek and streamlined, yet functional light. The Brooklyn incorporates revolutionary LED light panel technology to cast 450 lumens of bright white, energy-efficient light. Touch activated with continuous dimming, the Brooklyn features two USB ports in its space saving base. Its graceful form is skillfully designed from a single piece of aluminum, given a smooth satin finish, and treated with a scratch resistant surface coating.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Brooklyn has a touch activated power switch in its base. Pressing the button turns the light on/off; the light is continuously dimmable, and maintaining pressure changes the brightness. Removing and reapplying pressure will reverse the dimming direction. The light can be turned off at any brightness; turning the light on again recalls the previous level. USB cords may be used in either USB port and fed through the device holder on the base, which can be used to support charging devices.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in May 2014 in Hong Kong and finished in January 2015 in Santa Barbara, CA.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Brooklyn was created using a single piece of extruded aluminum and LED light panel technology. The LED light panel provides a soft, even output of light by directing the individual LEDs at etched acrylic, rather than simply shining directly onto the work surface. The etched acrylic then refracts the light evenly onto the work surface, enabling users to stare directly at the panel without suffering discomfort.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The idea was conceived due to the high market demand for utilitarian light sources. Additionally, there was a high demand for light sources with the efficiency of LEDs and the soft output of incandescent lights. The Brooklyn provides bright lighting without the harshness traditionally associated with LED arrays, as well as added functionality in its USB ports.
CHALLENGE: One of the most challenging obstacles in the realization of the design was ensuring the base of the product maintained its diminutive form while providing adequate support and stability for the light. This challenge was overcome by molding weights inside the base that fit around the electronics in the base, allowing the base to maintain its form while accommodating additional weight and lowering the light's center of gravity.
