DESIGN NAME: LOCKERELLA
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lock the umbrella
INSPIRATION: In the raining day Caesar, a student designer went to a market with brand new umbrella. When Caesar finished his job in the market and when he were to go out of the market, his umbrella was gone. At that time, he came up with a locker he saw at the market, thinking that he wishes he could lock his umbrella.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Users can lock their umbrella by setting their own password. Like any normal lockers, users set up their own password. When they want to lock the umbrella, fold the umbrella and scatter the locker. If someone try to use it, he or she has to match password and if not, the umbrella will not be opened, so that they will not try to still it.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: When users put their umbrella in a case, they fold their umbrella and scatter the password. Just like usual lockers, if the passwords are not matched the button to open the umbrella will not work. Therefore, no one but the owner can use the umbrella.
With the Lockerella, because users can lock their umbrella, users can prevent their umbrella from being stolen by others
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This program suggested in winter, 2013, Seoul and finished in Nottingham in 2014.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The first researches was to find out the structure of the locker. Caesar collected various forms of lockers to find out similarities between umbrella's handle and lockers and he did find them at umbrella's handle and a button password locker.
Then sizes of the Lockerlla are fully based on size of Caesar's hand actual sizes. He did simulation by making paper prototypes of a umbrella's handle, finding out the ideal place to put the locker that he even can do it in one hand.
CHALLENGE: The main obstacle was how umbrella can be one's own. To do this, the umbrella's accessibility has to be restricted.
Another obstacle was to make the figure simple. There was similarity with lockers and the umbrella's handle, which was a button. Lockers have a button to open just like umbrellas have a button to be opened. Also, changing passwords has to be done easy and fast. By putting the locking part at the bottom of handle it can be done even by one hand using ring finger and little finger.
