DESIGN NAME: Follow Me
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sculptural Vase
INSPIRATION: The form of Follow Me is inspired from the bird Peacock. This bird has a unique tail which forms a semi circular pattern when it fans its highly elongated upper tail covert feathers. This inspired me to develop the form of the vase as a bird with long upright tail and a pair of wings with perforated back to provide support for cut flowers. The intent is to make the flowers a part of the form.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Follow Me is a sculpture which functions as a vase. The idea is to make the vase take part in arrangement and conditioning of cut flowers. This vase is a set of three pieces with semi open form to allow air circulation around the stems keeping them moisture free and to allow users to add water daily without disturbing the arrangement. The two detachable wing pieces are perforated in a certain pattern to aid the arrangement. The vase provides aids while the flowers complete the overall form, forming a complementary pair.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: User has to choose a wing piece out of the two options according to the profile of the openings or perforation. The user can anchor it to the body of the vase with the help of the anchoring points provided in the body and then he can add water in to it. Its ready for arranging flowers. Now, the user can follow the profile of the openings or skip in between to create a pattern in the arrangement.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: From study on conditioning of flowers, it is found that flowers suck lots of water and one has to keep adding water as needed. And while doing this, arrangement is disturbed or water is spilled. Enclosed form of vases with water creates the moist environment and increases bacterial growth. A large mouth is convenient for adding water but do not provide enough aid for arrangement in pattern. These lead to design a vase which increases post harvest life instead of just a container to hold flowers.
CHALLENGE: The challenge was to solve a conflicting criterion and bring the bird form and functions together. For easy adding of water, wide mouth is good but it does not provide enough aid for arranging flowers in pattern. Additional aid may be needed for arrangement. The design has been developed as semi open form with three pieces separating the conflicting functions. The perforated wing part serves as the aid, while user can easily add water below the wings. The large gap also allows air circulation.
