DESIGN NAME: Aesteem
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lightswitch
INSPIRATION: You swipe or drag your finger across the screen so you can scroll through the various messages, photos and days of the week. You tap with your finger on the screen and as you touch the screen, you move your finger from left to right or from right to left. Along with the evolution of modern electronics, this movement has become the standard which we know as "Touch and Swipe". A lot of products today are equipped with a touch screen that rarely makes mechanical movements which are observable or audible. To create this rather special experience we have chosen to combine the two. Combining swipe with a mechanical movement was also the basic idea of this design
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Aesteem is the starting point –or the finishing touch- of an architectural journey. Some may call it a simple lightswitch that turns electrical devices on and off. But it really is about making a switch towards the beauty in everyday life.
The design is based on the perfect shape of a square. Slight pressure on each part sets the mechanical system in motion and turns the light on or off in a sliding movement. The switch then automatically returns to its original position.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Apart from its beauty and simplicity, the AESTEEM lightswitch has also been designed for optimal ease of installation and servicing.
By supplying our customers with only two separate parts, technical installation can be done without damaging the finishing part.
After connecting, mounting and testing the equipment to be controlled one just has to click on the finishing part to complete installation.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2012 and finished in April 2014 and has been launched at the "Biënnale Interieur" Kortrijk 2014 (Belgium).

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The cooperation between design and production was very important so we searched several partners who share our values of quality and innovation. Because of our sliding movement the design of the molds had to be right down to the mm to make our switch work. Our quest for perfection makes us proud and confident of the result.

CHALLENGE: The hardest creative challenge was to find a mechanical system that was durable and easy to handle. To create an effect where you can feel and hear the movement by swiping from the top to the bottom or by pressing the top of one of the buttons. Using your finger on one bar through a developed and sliding mechanism with a spring sliding the bars back to their original position. An experience that gives consumers a sense of authenticity and craft.
