| DESIGN NAME: Astronaut PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lamp INSPIRATION: One day I was drawing a very detailed sketch and I needed light and more light. I took the bulb, electric cord and a plug, made myself a lamp and hung it above my working desk. My daughter came and said: look, it looks just like the full moon above your head! There was a piece of silver coloured cloth on my table that was reflecting the bright light. We looked at it at the same time and the next moment there was a sewing machine on the table and we were making the body of an astronaut, filling it with rice and lavender... UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This lamp is unique because it can be hung on the wall, used as a pendant light or used as a table lamp. The lamp is made in a form of an astronaut. Astronauts must be able to fulfill all kinds of tasks inside the spacecraft or out in the space. When the lamp is hung above the table it looks like an astronaut hovering in the space. It is completely environmental friendly: made out of cotton fabric, filled with rice and lavender flowers, with an energy saving bulb. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: It can be hung from the ceiling or can be put on the table. It can be put or the bookshelf to hold books and to give light for reading them. It can be put on the bedside table to give dimmed night light (with the dimmer) and nice fragrance due to lavender flowers in it. Since it is filled with rice, it is bendable and it can hold its position. It can be posted in many different positions and it is fun to play with the lamp-doll-astronaut trying to find always new postures. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The idea was born it the second, and the prototype was made almost the same day. After the first lamp, we started changing the form and the dimension of the body as well as the dimension of the head/bulb and looking for the right fabric. It was made in Zagreb, Croatia. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: This lamp has three main parts.The body is made out of a silver coloured cotton fabric and it is in a form of a doll, filled with rice and dry lavender flowers that spread light fragrance. The heaviness of the rice makes it possible to put the body of the lamp in different positions. The second part is an energy saving bulb which represents the head of an astronaut, i.e. his helmet. The third part is a spiral electric cord. It represents astronaut’s communications umbilical. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 30 cm x 12 cm x 40 cm 1,7 kg TAGS: lamp, energy, astronaut, environmental, doll RESEARCH ABSTRACT: It was not enough just to draw the design, it had to be made. Each new body we made had to be completely finished in order to show its flaws. It was a gruelling task. Since it has certain heaviness, we had to find the right place for the cord on the back of the lamp in order to find the equilibrium, using the system of tries and errors . We couldn’t calculate it because each time the weight was different since we were changing the size and the shape of the body . CHALLENGE: The most challenging part was : to find the right size of the body according to the size of the head; to find the place on the back for the cord so that the Astronaut would be in balance when hung and to find the right filling ( e have tried millet, buckwheat, oats... but the rice was our first and final choice).
