DESIGN NAME: Alaskan Rock
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Vodka
INSPIRATION: The inspiration for the name Alaskan Rock was a cocktail incident that occurred in Melbourne in the 1970s involving happy Italian restaurateurs (long story). Great industrial design and Australia's growing reputation for excellent distilled spirits were also inspiring in equal measure.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Alaskan Rock is a premium Australian vodka presented in hand-finished black glass bottles designed in Sydney and made in Australia and Mexico. The name is shown in white raised lettering wrapping around one side of the rectangular bottle. There is a pronounced punt (the underneath) in the shape of an idealised Alaskan-type mountain range highlighted by a strong white line. All bottles are hand-labelled and numbered. The tops are a unique hollow design in orange plastic showing the AR logo.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Alaskan Rock bottles are hand-finished in black glass. As a vodka product the packaging is common required to be kept in a freezer. The bottles transform to a matte frosty black when frozen As they come up to room temperature the defrosting happens from the top down to reveal the glossy black glass finish.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project began in 2010 and Alaskan Rock vodka was brought to the commercial market in 2012.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Design research for Alaskan Rock Vodka involved close appraisal of spirits products around the world utilising the Australian spirits sales marketplace and the internet. Research objectives were to identify an uncommon bottle shape and bottle colour in the spirits marketplace. This resulted in the selection of a rectangular shape and use of black glass.
CHALLENGE: The creative challenge was to craft an iconic spirits bottle reflecting the brand name Alaskan Rock and the product philosophy of artisanal small-batch production. The colour palette was strictly limited: black glass combined with relief white lettering and burnt orange for the tops. The challenge was to introduce a unique punt and ensure strength at the shoulders of the rectangular bottle as well as to ensure hand-finishing. Hand-blown prototyping was completed in Sydney to prove the concept.
