DESIGN NAME: Zi Garden/Tangquan Tea Club
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sales & Exhibition
INSPIRATION: Using the ancient principles of Chinese culture, the Tangquan Tea Club uses
traditional Chinese materials and ancient architecture styles and techniques to
create an area that interacts with the exterior and interior to create a zen like state for the visitor. Rough green slate and natural wood floors make a direct relation to the exterior surroundings and create an environment of relaxation and simplicity. The space includes three separate tearooms, a library and a lake that can be viewed from all rooms.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Zen,one of ancient principles of culture.Tea,meanwhile an essential component of traditional culture in China. They both have existed starting from the ancient time. The interior design was interpreted by Zen’s spirit and charm,in which aim to stress communication between humanity and nature instead of aspiring magnificence and braveness in order to develop a piece of refuge of souls. It emphasizes light color in the whole Tea Club.Rough green slates and naturally informed wood floors look thick and smooth,as if time full of traces.Explanation of Chinese beauty was made by a sort of unique pasture in the Tea Club.
The designer integrates modernism with oriental Zen and forged this space into graceful tea space.Custom interior design starring tea concentrates on reflecting sense of space.Meanwhile,it extends experience of space forward. Each space in the Tea Club was separated to hemi-transparent ones by enormous wooden grids.Appreciate fragrant tea in units with a pleasant and relaxing mind. The combination of horizontal and vertical makes sequence of ideas clear. The nature of compound and inclusion in it also endows the space with unlimited imagination. There came out with meticulous and graceful atmosphere of space and simplified and spacious sense of space ultimately.
One of the tea rooms on the first floor orienting towards the east whose wall was casted with floor-to-ceiling wooden windows. The lake scenery outside becomes a part of the tea room. This beauty looks just as though a super large dimensional ink painting. You can enjoy the lake views out of the windows in the meantime appreciating tea.
The great poet Su Dongpo said ever,”Prefer to eat without meat, rather than live without bamboo.”Bamboo usually indicates elegance, nobility and modesty in Chinese culture. These excellent traits leave viewers associate with artistic conception by observing matters, leading to quiet and prestigious space. The other two tea rooms introduce external environment-natural scene-into the internal the same way as much as the first one.
The topic of the Exhibition Hall on the second floor begins with recurrence and introspection. The designer chose Humanistic Zen filled with peace and simplicity as context through it.The huge and heavy wooden desk,in front of which the wall is used to project video, zooms at the centre.
The library on the third floor highlights functionality and practicability.Silence, sufficiency of lighting and concentration are taken into consideration amid the construction. In order to achieve these effects properly, the designer arranged reasonably and regularly the interior settings with color, lighting and accessories.
Abandoning all the extravagant decoration,we do our best to reach ordinariness and prospect. We,meanwhile, respect the expressions of ancient architecture and just preserve the most essential elements of object in the universe. We are up to express our sincere respect to Su Dongpo by making the most use of basical materials, like cherry, beech, vine, bamboo, etc.A saying of Su Dongpo that goes,”Sole happiness is prior to all in the world(Translation). What we represents to people would well be a sort of situation Su Dongpo adored ever-gray wall,pillar,cyan-blue floor, white ceiling. The interior space is embellished with broken windows,bamboo-made curtain,couch,old-aged lanterns, orchid, poetry, calligraphy and drawing, etc.Especially the settlement of all paintings and calligraphies,it racked our brains and we searched and collected heritages relating to Su Dongpo as much as possible. We utilize technique of duplication to reproduce as much similar as those original masterpieces.Let millennium Dongpo Culture flow in space-time by furnishing duplicated prints both indoors and outdoors.Hereby,we could unveil the scene in which refined scholars led by Su Dongpo who got through entertaining lives gathered in the same period.
Occupied with a collection of oriental tea urns, pots and containers, the whole space is integrated with spirit of tea.Simultaneously, there emerges all the function and artistic conception of the space.
What we are wooing is texture on the surface of decoration materials.Comparison of diverse texture of materials is very parallel to mutual communication of distinct form and structure. The designer focused on details in order to soften visually these tough materials. No matter those arranged figures of Buddha and twigs disorderly on the corridors or delicate Chinaware and tea sets in cabinets, which enrich the entire interior space.
