DESIGN NAME: Kravata
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Tie
INSPIRATION: On a very formal dinner party, a man stained his tie with food and felt embarrassed the whole evening. The idea was born! Since I have been using Plexiglas for making necklaces, I have decided to make ties as well. Plexiglas as the material is light, modern, it has many colors and - it can be easily cleaned! Anyway, I find men’s formal outfit obsolete. The only decorations are different patterns on silk ties and sometimes a tie needle and cuff links. So, I have decided to disturb this dull order by making a tie that is a necklace as well.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In the 17th century several thousands of soldiers came to Paris to help King Louis XIII.
There were also Croatian soldiers amongst them. They differed from the others by wearing small scarves around their necks, called “kravata” in Croatian language. The French liked that piece of garment so much that they accepted it immediately. It became a symbol of elegance of the French bourgeois.
I have created a contemporary homage to KRAVATA. My tie is not only a piece of garment but also a piece of jewelry, a necklace that can be worn in formal occasions, made primarily for men but which can be worn also by women.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This tie, made out of Plexiglas plates and a steel chain is light, it doesn't CHOKE and it can easily be cleaned.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: I have made this project in my home town, Zagreb, Croatia. I have been changing shapes of pieces that make the tie for almost five month, trying to find their best form.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I started my project by measuring different tipes of ties. I created the tie which is not too long nor too wide, one that can be worn by most men. The next step was to make MOSAIC of Plexiglas pieces that make the tie. I had them laser cut. When I connected them with steel links, I saw flaws that needed to be corrected. The process of drawing and cutting was repeted many times untill the final version.
CHALLENGE: The real, time consuming challenge was to find the right form of plastic pieces , those that would not hang askew when the tie is put around the neck.
