DESIGN NAME: Sparkle
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Handknotted Rug
INSPIRATION: Sparkle is from the collection Celebration and was inspired by my memories of celebrating life with loved ones. The design collection is all in handspun silk, bold and modern with its colorful vibrant palette of rich blues, purples and gold. It recreates another memory of a Parisian dinner party that I once attended. Sparkle echoes the jewelry worn in its abstract form as the light catches the sparkle on the bracelet.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The objective was to create a three dimensional design in a two dimensional form that would also be functional for the end user. Art, Beauty and Comfort were important elements to be combined in the Persian Knot.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The silk yarn is textured due to the handspun yarns and is more durable than wool. It is construction with 120 knots per square inch so the density is higher to give more detail in the design and more intensity to the thickness to last longer.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design work started in March 2013 and it took five month to hand weave in India.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The silk yarns were first handspun to create various thickness in the yarns before they were dyed. Then they were double dyed creating dark and light tones which give a more tonal effect on the final woven surface of the rug.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Dimensions are 2500mm width by 3000mm height.
The rug is made in pure handspun silk in the Persian Knot.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Having over twenty years as a hospitality designer and working in some of the great interior design companies in London, Los Angeles and recently Dubai, I found that in my research and own experience that there were very few rugs on the market that offered something more than just a pattern. Therefore I decided to launch my own company of bespoke rugs that would be designed with a more artistic understanding. Our philosophy is to be bold and not to follow current trends but to offer a new way in designing rugs.
CHALLENGE: The technique was not new but trying to create a modern abstract form was something new for the weavers who were skilled at tradition Persian rugs.
The style was not a typical rug and we had to train them to see the rug as a different form of expression. It was rewarding to see them proud of the final result, which was very much their achievement combined with a new design vision by Ayka design. A design language had broken down the barriers between tradition and the new era of rug design.
