DESIGN NAME: Reflections
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Handknotted Rug
INSPIRATION: Textures was inspired by my travels to South America during my visits to Brazil and Argentina. Having seen the most amazing landscapes and colours I was touched first hand by their many living abstract forms and the beauty of their surroundings. These forms inspired me to think about recreating these textures on a rug that would eventually inspire the end user and be seen as a piece of art.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The objective was to create a three dimensional design in a two dimensional form that would also be functional for the end user. Art, Beauty and Comfort were the goals while trying to achieve a texture that was not easy to construct by hand by using the Tibetan Knot.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This Technique creates a three dimension surface which hides the dirt and gives longevity to the life of the rug.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design was started in March 2013 and took five months to hand weave in india
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The silk yarns were first hand spun creating various thickness which would enhance the design once flatten in a two dimensional woven form.
Then they were twin dyed twice to achieve a double tone on the yarns themselves giving a three dimension tone before weaving. The technique had never been made before and it caused the weavers some problems in trying to achieve the tightness while hanging yarns at the same time.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Dimensions are 2500mm width by 3000mm height.
The rug is made in pure hand spun silk in the Tibetan Weave
Date of Completion November 2013

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Having over twenty years as a hospitality designer and working in some of the great interior design companies in London, Los Angeles and recently Dubai. I found that in my research and own experience that there were very few rugs on the market that offered something more than just a pattern. Therefore I decided to launch my own company of bespoke rugs that would be designed with a more artistic understanding. Our philosophy is to be bold and not to follow current trends but to offer a new way in designing rugs.
The rug should be seen as a Piece of Art to be loved and cherished.
CHALLENGE: The technique had never been made before and it caused the weavers some problems in trying to achieve the tightness while hanging yarns at the same time. We had to specially train them to understand these new ways of weaving and to give them extra time to not rush the process. The first rug took seven months to weave as it was a new learning experience for everyone. Now they are skilled with this texture and they are now able to do it in five months .
