DESIGN NAME: EcoCurve
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Energy Efficient Dryer
INSPIRATION: Paper towels create 2% of total landfill in the USA. The use of hand dryers within corporate and commercial environments minimises paper towel consumption, reducing constant maintenance costs. Unfortunately dryers predominantly use power hungry motors and heating elements consuming up to 2300W of energy. These dryers have not evolved to utilise new materials, remaining ungainly and noisy. A poorly designed unit combined with poor maintenance can potentially collect dust and harvest bacteria.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: EcoCurve has a super-efficient digital brushless motor that dries hands in 11 seconds, equating to a cost saving of 99 percent compared to paper towels. The patented compression and heat recover system combines new and recirculated air to increase its overall temperature before being accelerated to deliver heat straight to the hands. Intelligent inbuilt energy monitoring systems wirelessly reports usage to building management servers providing real time information to minimise and manage energy allocation.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: When hands are detected air is instantly drawn into the motor where it is accelerated and compressed to increase temperature without additional heaters. A portion of air is then recirculated back into the system for further heating all within seconds. The angled air nozzle directs the airflow onto the hands of the user to focus the heat and minimise drying times and noise. When not in use the intelligent internal sensors constantly monitor the environment to further save energy by entering hibernation.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2013 - London and finished in June 2014 - Sheffield. The final design has achieved success in numerous, prestigious Green Energy Awards, been awarded the Quiet Mark, an international mark of approval for noise reduction and exhibited at London Ideal Home show.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: All major components are injection moulded from recycled ABS and PC/ABS blends incorporating antimicrobial additives to protect against bacteria. Injection moulding allowed complex parts to be developed to reduce components and weight. The use of threaded inserts has been minimised to allow easy repair and disassembly and recycling. Fitting is simple encompassing a robust recycled stainless steel wall bracket as a first fix to ensure a safe and rapid onsite installation.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 250mm X Height 370mm X Depth 134mm. EcoCurve features an 550W digital brushless motor in a patented compression and heat recover system. Air is heated to 39 degrees centigrade and accelerated to 30 litres per second drying hands in 11 seconds at an ultra-quiet noise level of 87dB. Sensors self calibrate on installation to improve efficiency and accurately track hands for instant activation. An intuitive fixing method includes a fail safe isolating feature to guide the unit into position, reducing setup times.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: HJC applied a user centred approach throughout development. Anthropometric research and testing proved dryers cause regular fingertip contact with unhygienic mounting walls. This identified ideal mounting positions, sound levels and an air nozzle angle to avoid unwanted contact. Testing multiple and single jet manifolds verified the optimum design to maximise air flow and noise levels. The EcoCurve nozzle guides air flow directly into the palm, deterring unwanted contact and ensuring user comfort.
CHALLENGE: The challenge for HJC was to effectively combine SAVortex unique patented compression and heat recovery system and the latest motor technology in an elegant slim line package. Key component restrictions resulted in testing numerous internal configurations early in the development process to identify the most space efficient solution. Sound levels were considered and reduced through careful air flow paths with smooth junctions. The final design has surpassed all performance and aesthetic expectations.
