DESIGN NAME: House for Installation
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residence
INSPIRATION: The primary room in the home is characteristic of traditional Japanese architecture. There is an alcove called ''Toko9;' in the traditional Japanese room. It is a Japanese term generally referring to a built-in recessed space in a Japanese style reception room, in which items for artistic appreciation are displayed. It is one that confers a margin or between the space itself it. I realized to unite a blank living and dining area, and a rectangular volume sunk into the wall, which references Buddhist altar.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This is a renovated house located in Osaka, Japan, transformed an old house into a modern minimalist atelier and residence for artists.
The building had an office part and a residence part. Due to the sloppy configuration of the inner rooms, the residence part was showing its age and bad condition.
Simplicity, flexibility and elegant use of light defines the living and working spaces,
an abstract setting for calmness, meditation and creativity.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The slanted wall along the corridor gives an impression of depth. It narrows the soft natural light from the south side, amplified the intensity of it with proceeding inside space. A opening door is installed on the middle of corridor, which leads as service circulation to the kitchen. Staircase is extended so as to be perpendicular thereto, the amphidromous flow space is provided. Each rooms were repositioned so that natural light can circulate around the house.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2013 finished in March 2014 in Rimini, and "Open House" exhibition took place in May 2014. There, many neighbors, clients, and architects gathered.

To maintain a consistent minimalism in detailing, the sliding door's track system and indirect light system are concealed in the ceiling. Various lighting illuminates effectively space. Each space itself is present as a light installation.
Sheer curtains serve to regulate illuminance, to substitute daylight as necessary and accent the space.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This new improved layout allows when the doors and windows are open, wind, light and sounds to pass through the house and created a dynamic flow of the daily life.
However perfection is in the details. The decoration in this House for Installation is a perfect example of Japanese minimalism. Dominant white color, clean forms and an almost poetic symmetry characterize this residence. Yet the trained eye will spot the carefully positioned lighting and beautiful flooring that show style and substance.
CHALLENGE: I considered how I should devise the space in order to provide enough natural light without making new windows. In this dwelling, through the day and night, the light and the air are passed through, and wind and various sounds flows.
This gives the movement and various expressions of life into the white space with the inorganic atmosphere. By providing a primitive space of living, residents will be able to have diverse selectivity.
