DESIGN NAME: Trifold
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Table, Stool, Trestle, Plinth
INSPIRATION: The project has been greatly influenced by the interest in finding 3-dimensional structures that are folded with single sheets. The possibility of enhancing structures by inserting bends is a fascinating aspect of engineering. The idea was to find a robust shape that can be produced with a minimum amount of preparation whilst utilizing standard sized metal sheets.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The table's shape is informed by a complex combination of triangular surfaces, a unique folding sequence and a clean fixing detail at the base. The table has a minimalist yet complex and sculptural shape. From every view angle it reveals a unique composition. The design can be scaled and altered to suit various purposes without compromising its structural integrity.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The table can be playfully arranged in upright or horizontal configurations acting as a stool, plinth, trestle or as simply as a table. By rotating the table its appearance can be 'altered' to achieve diverse compositions. This way its design remains alluring to the user and offers interesting combination options by itself and with other furniture pieces. It is light-weight, robust and with its brushed anodised surface it can be used indoors as well as outdoors.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in February 2013 and was completed in March 2014 in London.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Trifold Table is a showcase of digital manufacturing and the use of new manufacturing technologies such as robotics. Aluminium sheets with a thickness of 3mm in brushed finish form the base material. The unfolded shapes are CNC-machined and routed to prepare the structural bends. The table is being folded in a set sequence using the robots. All edges are CNC cut and chamfered to achieve maximum precision.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 360 mm x Depth 360 mm x Height 430 mm
The table will be anodised in three different colours: silver, black and champagne. The anodised finish makes the table scratch-resistant and expresses the material it is made of.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The shape has been developed using 1:10 scale paper models to test various configurations and folding sequences. This has been a very intuitive design process and led to various full scale models and prototypes to test the aesthetics and the stability.
CHALLENGE: The production process has been developed in collaboration with a robotic fabrication company specialising in folding metals with 6-axis robots. CAD 3D models were used to investigate the structural forces and geometries at the bending edges of the piece. During the development of the design the sequence of the folding has been constantly adjusted to the available folding techniques, to reduce the risk of a 'spring-back39; effect of the bent metal and to find an optimal detail for the fastening of the base plates.
