| DESIGN NAME: Roof PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lighting INSPIRATION: Roof is inspired from natural light sources, architecture, communication, people, dinners, meetings, sincerity, natural textures. During socialization people are affected from surroundings. To provide intimacy Roof creates a shelter of light with its form and homogenous light output. Just like a roof, it isolates people from surroundings and let them unite and became sincere. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Roof is a LED luminaire for interiors. It is simple, ecofriendly and modular. Mostly, it is a connective product. Roof is a shelter of light for dinners, a uniting object for meetings, a fun lighting system for interior living. Roof differs from other luminaires with its concave form.It is an emotional design product by consideration of increasing intimacy in communication. Roof is an isolator. Under Roof, you focus on what is under Roof. With its homogenous light and uniting form, you feel isolated from surroundings and focus on the table and communication. Mounting Roof in a row with up and down system will create an impressive texture of direct and indirect light. Its wooden texture will amplify the philosophy of the product and represent the ecological side of the LED technology. With physical and simple mounting details, Roof can be easily maintainable and it is sustainable. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: - PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in February 2014 in Turkey and is being prototyped and tested at the moment. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Roof contains PCB (Printed Circuit Board) led technology for illumination. As a power supply it uses a high efficiency constant voltage driver. The heat output of PCB leds should be conducted to provide longer lifetime of LEDs. PCB’s are mounted on the powder coated metal sheet to provide thermal conductivity of LEDs. Wooden structure provides a space between light source and PC sheet to provide homogeneous light output. As a material wood gives a warm and natural feeling, which strengthen the philosophy of the product. It also represents the ecological aspect of the LED technology. PC sheet is slided among the slots inside of the wooden structure and take the form of the concave. (There is no need for moulding the PC sheet.) Then its capped with metal sheet from one side with 2 metric threads. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Roof has 2 sizes with 1150 and 1800 mm length. Both can be used as suspendant or surface mounted. TAGS: Roof, LED, lighting, communication, concave, wooden, luminaire RESEARCH ABSTRACT: - CHALLENGE: The challenge was to create a luminaire that will strengthen the communication between people through form, light and material choices. While doing so, feasibility of the product for the market was also a criteria. Simple assembly and production processes was a major concern.
