DESIGN NAME: HPI110
PRIMARY FUNCTION: High-definition Loudspeaker
INSPIRATION: The project came about from a need to develop a compact speaker that addressed many of the issues in current designs. By designing a speaker from the ground up there was an opportunity to create a unique speaker that not only addressed the issues but delivered on performance and price.
The inspiration for the design came from ergonomic observations and evolved to create a form that was visually strong, easy to carry and install and delivered performance making it a leader in its class.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The HPI110 is the most powerful, compact, ultra lightweight, loudspeaker of its class. Designed from the ground up the HPI110 removes the need for DSP (electronic compensation), reduces power consumption and eliminates the need for addition electronic hardware. The HPI110 delivers faithful vocal reproduction at high energy outputs with advanced rigging configurations enabling uniform coverage. Its ultra-lightweight and compact form allows a single user to install the HPI110 quickly and easily.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: By eliminating the need for DSP (electronic signal compensation) existing electronic equipment can be used thus reducing expense to the user. By directing more of the energy away from the walls and ceiling the HPI110 delivers exceptional sound reproduction over a larger distance. The HPI110 improves the installation process through a variety of carrying methods andis combined with an advanced rigging system provides single, double and triple configurations.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project commenced in Melbourne 2011 and completed in early 2012
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Digital and Electronic Device Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The HPI110 is made from high quality materials inside and out. Internally ultra-lightweight performance componentry is used to deliver outstanding audio reproduction. The main body consists of a birch-ply cabinet combined with a unique aluminium handle that not only improves carrying ergonimics but also provides a rigid chassis to minimise vibrations in the cabinet.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Dimensions: 641mm x 306mm x 352mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research involved understanding the current challenges that effect speakers today where high frequency horn drivers, when mated to asymmetrical horns, have asymmetrical frequency responses requiring corrective electronics. The HPI110 uses a patented phase plug time alignment system that has the effect of compensating with sophisticated complex geometry.
CHALLENGE: The most difficult issue is translating the mathematical constructs of loudspeaker design parameters into real world physical dynamics. We overcame this natural limitation through laser vibrometry, a cutting edge technology, only available in a few laboratories globally. It allowed us to take measurements in real time and give us the real world realities behind the mathematical constructs and ultimately design a solution plaguing existing designs.
