DESIGN NAME: Floating Black Boxes
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Exhibition
INSPIRATION: The flying boxes represent the perception of the impossible for the new and innovative ideas.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Exhibited at TSMD in Ankara, the results of d3 UV2013 competition is on display to celebrate unbuilt concepts. Two black boxes in the main exhibition hall which are floating in the air are designed to represent the perception of the impossible for the new and innovative ideas. These boxes are composed of smaller units to emphasize the building process. The bottom part of these boxes is not finished intentionally. The units on the ground represent the unfinished process and the continuation of the research phase.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The visitor of the exhibition is one of the most important component of the design concept. The people standing in the boxes complete the theme of the main concept which is “If you are in the box, you are a part of the connection with the ground/reality". Without the visitors of the exhibition, the concept is incomplete and the message is not clear. It is called "Box with legs" by many visitors of the exhibition because of this reason.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in November 2013 and finished in January 2014, and exhibited in Turkish Architectural Center.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The black boxes are produced from a special plastic material. For each boxes four walls are produced and assembled in the exhibition space. Laser cutter is used to create the grid on the surfaces of each wall to express the units which is essential for the main concept. Special steel beams which can be rotated 180 degrees in vertical and horizontal directions are designed for the stability of the boxes.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Each box has a size of 3mx4m with a 1.70m height and are placed 1m above the ground. The distance between these two flying boxes is 3.50m to allow the circulation in the exhibition hall.
