DESIGN NAME: ErgoFeet
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Footrest For Passenger Seats
INSPIRATION: The idea came up from products with similar purpose which are used in offices. The design is mainly based on the present folding footrests used in buses in order to keep the conventional look.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: ErgoFeet is an active footrest which avoids blood accumulation in feet during long journeys that cause fatigue, sleepiness, coldness, bulging feet and tingling legs. It is mounted under passenger seats. It starts and stops on demand by pushing its button. The vertical movement created by the pedal helps joints at ankles and knees move; which keeps users bloodstream flowing through veins. ErgoFeet can also be adapted into train and airplane passenger seats.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: When users feel uncomfortable about their legs; pushing the button in the middle starts the electric motor placed in the main body which rotates the two wheels placed on both sides by 20rpm speed. Parts connecting the wheels to the pedals create the vertical movement on an arc shaped path by pulling from the upper pivots of the pedals. This movement helps blood flow through veins. User can stop the engine by again pushing the button.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Product is designed in Bursa in January&February 2014.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Vehicle, Mobility and Transportation Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Product consists of a basic electric motor, ABS plastic injection parts and conventional fittings.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Product has variable dimensions as it has a folding body. Dimensions when folded are 266x242x114mm, and 266x198x180mm when opened.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Starting point for developing the product was the results of questionnaires conducted with passengers who prefer coaches for long distance travels. Complaints of the passengers are mainly because of the still blood in feet. So I have focused on methods for moving feet and legs while designing the product.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part while designing ErgoFeet was to decide on the method for maintaining bloodstream in veins. At last I achieved it by rising the toes, as it keeps a slight movement from toe to knees.
