| DESIGN NAME: NI PRIMARY FUNCTION: LED Parasol INSPIRATION: We never think about designing a product. We just create what we need. During our holiday in Maldives luxury resort, after we dined on the beach and walked back to the resort, we came up with a strong feeling that we do need something special in our garden. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: NI is realizing expectations for furniture in a way that it serves not only a single function. Innovatively combining a parasol and garden torch tailored for the luxury market, it gratifies people from day to night, next to sun loungers or along the riverside. With the proprietary finger-sensing OTC (one-touch dimmer), users can control the brightness of the 3-channel lighting system at ease. It consists of two down lights and one up light and everything can be controlled separately. In supplying power for a system with over 2000 pcs of 0.1W LEDs, NI adopts a low-voltage 12V LED driver that generates little heat. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Same as traditional garden parasols, NI is very easy and convenient to use. The OTD (one-touch-dimmer) functions just as your smart phone, with its finger motion sensors, you can easily dim and brighten the lights. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project kick-started in February 2013 in Hong Kong, China, while the initial idea came up in 2012 December. The first prototype was finished in January 2014, and was later exhibited in International Furniture Fair Singapore in March 2014. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: NI uses strong aluminum frame with outdoor powder coating. We created a IP connector for each light, ensuring people can change the LED easily. The down-lights use a 1800K LED candle light color, making it easier for the eyes at night time. The up light delivers a 2200K warm light that is perfect for setting the mood for guests at night. Being environmental friendly, the total power consumption of the NI system only equals that of three 60W incandescent light bulbs while providing a much brighter lit area. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: NI 350, initially we had two choices for the shade fabric. The first one that we finally decided on was from the famous Sunbrella, while another was from Indonesia. The strong aluminium plus stainless steel construction made NI a perfect outdoor stand. Pairing up with RF connector, we developed a remote control allowing commercial users to control up to 8 pieces of parasols easily, ensuring simple and effective operation in resorts and other luxury locations. Every time when we are sitting in restaurant or dinning on the beach there are always parasols. They are beautiful, but when the night falls they cannot function with the environment. NI is all-in-one cabling and therefore you can move it and do the set up very fast. After testing over 50 times of different LED colors, we chose 1800K LED candle light for down light and 2200K for up light respectively. CHALLENGE: In order to overcome the challenge in cabling and water proofing so as to make it suitable for all environments, we tailor-make the molds with water proof gasket that satisfies IP Rating, ensuring real protection for the PCB inside.
