| DESIGN NAME: Wood Stick Sofa PRIMARY FUNCTION: Wooden Cushion Sofa INSPIRATION: I’ve always thought about the issues... Can a chair made of wood be cushioned? Is there any way to make a cushion by using wood material? My final goal was to make a wooden sofa with only advantages of the existing wooden bench and fleecy sofa discarding their disadvantages. After a long time of deliberation, I determined to further develop the feature of bending, and finally realized a cushioning of ‘Wood Stick Sofa’ by getting wood with best elasticity and intensity and making a thin stick, undergoing trial and error. Like bending among bow-production or woodwork skills, although the method using its feature of bending is not new, I think application of the feature into cushion-making for human body was accidental but groundbreaking. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A wooden bench and a cushion sofa are common in the surrounding of life and have their own advantages. Those are the emotional warmth which can be felt from the wooden material and comfortableness of the fleecy cushion. However, disadvantages are noticed when we sit on the bench and the sofa for a long time. Pain derived from hardness of the wood and stuffiness due to feeling of wrapped by the cushion. After a long research and experiments, I completed a special sofa where the above-mentioned disadvantages are removed and advantages are enhanced based on development of the method of ‘Stick Cushion.’ A sofa providing a wood-originating feeling and cushioning feeling fitted to various body shapes... Wood Stick Sofa is an innovative sofa with cushion made of wood never been before. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: As an advantage of the bench, feeling of wood and an advantage of the sofa providing a soft cushioning feeling are integrated into one. Although it is a wooden product, it provides more excellent and comfortable cushioning feeling. The comfortableness by the innovative way of cushioning, provided from 116 sticks bending respectively, is hard to imagine before sitting on the sofa. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Wood Stick Sofa, using a feature of bending, is not an outcome from a great technology. It’s very simple but a merely new way that nobody has ever tried before. The method is to make a seat and a back-rest by sticking multiple thin and long sticks, after selecting wood material with good elasticity and intensity. Its principle is, despite weak power of each stick, to distribute power from dozens of sticks bending respectively according to various body shapes to provide customized cushion. The kind and size of the sticks can be differentiated by usage, and such stick can be made by using leftover wood, which is a big merit of recyclability. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 2140mm(W)x1200mm(H)x TAGS: Wood Stick Sofa, Wood, Stick, Sofa, Stick Cushion, Cushion, Wooden Cushion RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Cushion – A cushion that uses the resilience of wood was made by using a resilient wood material for the bottom (Part you sit on) and back (Part your back touches), a long thin stick was made to fix one side and to bend over on the opposite side. A total of 116 sticks each bend to fit the human shape, a cushion that is customizable. This revolutionary cushion provides a soft, resilient and comfortable touch. (I call this method the ‘Stick Cushion’) Ventilation – 58 sticks in the bottom, 58 sticks in the back are placed at a uniform distance, allowing airflow between the spaces, providing freshness without stuffiness even if you sit for a long period of time. Cushion’s greatest drawback, stuffiness, was solved. Light – Because thin wood sticks are the primary materials of this sofa, unlike thick panels of other wooden benches, it is very light compared to its size as a 4 person sofa (Weighs approximately 25 kgs) Manufacturing convenience – It is made of 100% wood, easier to make because it does not use other materials such as leather or fabric. Economic – Due to its main material of thin sticks, the wood can be reusable according to its length. This is extremely advantageous environmentally as well. Long-lasting – Existing sofas are disposed when its cushion loses resilience. Wood Stick Sofa, however, can be replaced with thin sticks when it breaks or loses elasticity, usable as a brand new product. Also, it is environment-friendly for disposal because it is 100% wood. CHALLENGE: The challenging problems were distributing power by calculating each stick’s weight and setting a brace to prevent from breaking when suppressed beyond each stick’s weight. Also, it was not easy to find wood perfect for Stick Cushion with best intensity and elasticity among candidates in secured supply, as each wood’s elasticity was different. Hard Maple from North America was easy to be supplied, of excellent intensity and elasticity, and appropriate for the method of Stick Cushion.
